Selena Gomez Shuts Down Body Shamers: 'I Can Do What I Want!'
Selena Gomez has received her own share of body shaming, with the most recent criticism directed at her nude black-and-white album cover for her upcoming record "Revival."
In an interview in Power 106's "The Cruz Show" on Friday, Sept. 11, the singer-actress stood up to her critics and discussed how the new album will highlight a new journey in her career.
"You have to understand that I dealt with a lot of body shaming this year and I've never experienced that before," the former Disney Channel star said, as quoted by E! News. "I don't care about that stuff, but I did start gaining weight, and I didn't really mind it...Man, that hurt. That was really hurtful."
Disapproval rained on Gomez when she bared her bikini body during a vacation in Mexico last April, People wrote. Earlier this year, the 23-year-old recording artist also turned heads when she posed topless for V Magazine.
The minimalist album cover of "Revival" is a far cry from Gomez's other records, but she insisted that she preferred it to be that way.
"It's not even about my weight. It's just that I'm not going to give a f--k what people say-sorry! I'm not going to let them get to me. I can do what I want. I'm not doing that all the time. It's beautiful. It represents that it's bare. I don't want diamonds and things all over me for the cover, and really thick makeup. I wanted it natural, so...geez!" she explained, as reported by E! News.
"Revival" will be released on Oct. 9 and marks Gomez's departure from Disney Music to Interscope, Entertainment Weekly reported. It will showcase sexy songs just like the album's lead single, "Good for You." She said that being under the spotlight has taken her "into so many different phases," but she has learned to feel "sexy and good" and let down her inhibitions through her music.
The "Hotel Transylvania 2" star said that recording "Revival" was an "emotional" and "exhausting" process, but it also felt "almost like therapy," E! News reported.
"At the end of the day, this is not going to be a subject once the album comes out. The music is going to take over because that's how confident I am about it," Gomez said, as quoted by the news outlet.
"Revival" includes collaborations with Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Hitboy, and Rock Mafia, Entertainment Weekly listed. When asked whether the record will touch on her rollercoaster relationship with Justin Bieber, Gomez admitted that there will be mentions of her ex-boyfriend, but nothing too precise.
