Mexican TV Network Azteca Uses Donald Trump's Immigration Comments to Hype US vs Mexico Soccer Match
Soccer matches are almost always a big deal -- especially for inter-country games.
However, a Mexican TV network decided that in order to get more noise from Mexican soccer fans, it is imperative that they use the words of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump.
It's no secret that Trump has said a lot of silly things since he announced his intent for the office in June, and even his candidacy speech is filled with a lot of derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants, to be specific.
So instead of mumbling about it by themselves, the Mexican TV network, Azteca, decided to haunt Trump with his own words. The network spliced together his lines to create a very good advertisement for the upcoming USA-Mexico match.
NPR noted that the ad also featured electric guitar wails of "The Star Spangled Banner" in the background, with a video montage of Mexican players scoring goals, frustrated U.S. players and even disappointed American fans.
According to the Huffington Post, this is a smart move, considering Trump's interest in the game. The site noted that Mexico continually produces extraordinary talents to play for Major League Soccer and in August, a group that Trump is interested in tried to buy Colombia soccer club Atletico Nacional for $100 million (although ultimately, they did not succeed.)
The ad is said to target the U.S. team but smartly takes a few jabs at Trump. The most obvious jab, according to HuffPost, is the one with Trump saying "when Mexico sends its people, they don't send the best," which was then followed by a footage Giovanni Dos Santos signing with Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy. Dos Santos is a player on the Mexican national team and is considered among the best players in the league.
The video ends with Trump saying "The American Dream is dead", repeating and slowing down the last two words for emphasis.
The teams will be facing each other at the FIFA Confederations cup. The winning team for the upcoming October 10 match in Pasadena, California will move on to represent the CONCCACAF region in the Russia in 2017.
Trump has not responded to the ad yet, however, if he follows up in true Trump fashion, the world will definitely be hearing from him -- racist comments and all.
What do you think about this advertisement -- is it genius or did the Mexican network sink too low?
