'Spectre' Trailer & Release Date: Sam Smith to Sing 'James Bond' Film's Theme Song?
The theme song for "Bond" movies is almost always a big deal, which is why, for the past few months, people have been mulling about who will provide the theme song to the upcoming installment, called "Spectre."
Ready?
The singer to provide the theme for the latest James Bond flick is none other than Grammy Award-winning Briton, Sam Smith. The crooner, whose version of an announcement consisted of a black and white photo, posted it on his social networking sites, uncaptioned.
So how do we know he's providing the track? According to Entertainment Weekly, the photo is of a hand wearing a ring with a small octopus logo -- an insignia known for the nefarious criminal organization SPECTRE or Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, dating back from the 1962 Bond film, "Dr No". The logo was also noted to be part of the promotional push for the film, making an appearance on a teaser poster as early as December last year.
There have been a lot of speculations as to who will follow up on Adele's "Skyfall", which was the theme song for the 2012 Bond film of the same name. Names included Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Lorde, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, and even Adele (again).
Billboard reported that in July, "Spectre" director Sam Mendes said that the theme song has already been recorded and that it sounds "fantastic". He also said that fans will not have to wait too long to find out who is the face behind the mic, and it seems that the said face is that of the "Stay With Me" singer.
Actually, it has been confirmed by Sony Pictures Entertainment via Variety that Smith is indeed the one responsible for the latest song. In a statement, producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, "Sam and Jimmy Napes have written the most inspirational song for 'Spectre' and with Sam's extraordinary vocal performance, 'Writing's On The Wall' will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time."
Variety also noted that Smith said about the opportunity, "This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy."
And a legacy it is. Landing this gig means that Smith will be now be joining the ranks of iconic pop performers that include Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Carly Simon, Jack White, and Alicia Keys.
