US Open 2015 News: Maria Sharapova Bids Out Following Leg Injury, Returns in 'Few Weeks'
No US Open this year for World No. 3 Maria Sharapova -- after she pulled out from the tournament following a right leg injury.
On her Facebook page, the tennis superstar announced her non-participation in the US Open.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this year's US Open. I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong," Sharapova posted a day before the event.
This is reportedly her second time to withdraw from the competition in three years.
According to ESPN, the US Tennis Association (USTA) also announced her withdrawal almost at the same time as her post.
To take Sharapova's place, Daria Kasatkina will now play in the tournament.
It was noted in the ESPN report that the tennis stunner sustained the injury while she was training after Wimbledon. This also led to her withdrawal from two tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.
"It's a tough decision to make, but I think a wise one, in order to give myself the right amount of time to be as healthy as I can be for the Open. I believe [it's] very realistic, but I don't know if it would be realistic if I did compete and start tomorrow," the tennis player earlier said.
Meanwhile, BBC said that Sharapova was set to go against Australia's Daria Gavrilova come Monday in New York.
Asked about the performance of her supposed main rival in the tournament Serena Williams, Sharapova told the New York Times that the American champ is really playing at her best.
"She's been playing on an incredible level, and I don't think it takes anything away from other players. We have to step up, me and everyone else. Her level makes us want to be at a better level," Sharapova explained.
Earlier last week, she also said that she is determined to do better in her game and get through with her injury.
"I'm getting better, I'm getting there. It's still a day-to-day thing, and I feel like I have to improve with every day and get better. I mean, I'll be coming in with no matches since Wimbledon, which will be tough, and I think I'll have to lower my expectations. Which, is not easy - not for me, at least. But over all, I'm a pretty optimistic individual," she expressed.
