'The Latin Explosion' HBO Documentary to Feature Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Sofia Vergara & More Latino Artists
HBO's documentary film "The Latin Explosion: A New America" will showcase a bunch of famous Latino personalities.
The documentary will premiere on Monday, Nov. 16 on HBO and HBO Latino and is set to simulcast in Latin America and the Caribbean. The film, which is created and executive produced by veteran music executive Tommy Mottola, gives honor to the artists and visionaries "who have exploded onto the U.S. music scene and gone on to become global superstars, showing how they have influenced every aspect of American society, from culture to politics to the economy," Deadline reported.
"We have assembled the largest array of Latino superstars ever in a film telling a powerful story of their history and immigration, politics, and rise from a small minority population to the most critical demographic in the United States," Mottola said, as quoted by Deadline.
He continued, "Working with Richard Plepler and Sheila Nevins at HBO has been one of the best and richest experiences of my career, and there could be no better home for this film and its important message than HBO."
Set to be highlighted in the film are the musical artists who were responsible for the Latino popularity in the late '90s, such as Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Shakira, and Marc Anthony, as well as the hottest Hispanic stars of today, Pitbull and Romeo Santos, Deadline listed.
These featured singers will talk about their mainstream crossover hits and how they paved the way for "the American experience, setting the stage for today's Latin Explosion," the news outlet further wrote.
Other Hispanic stars to be featured in the documentary are Eva Longoria, George Lopez, Los Lobos, Cheech Marin, Thalía, and Sofía Vergara, with John Leguizamo serving as the narrator, Deadline added.
The film will also showcase the '50s' cha-cha and mambo trends with Desi Arnaz and Rita Moreno, Carlos Santana and Jose Feliciano in the '60s, the salsa craze of the '70s, and the rise of superstars Emilio and Gloria Estefan in the '80s, the news outlet noted.
Sitting in the director's chair for "The Latin Explosion: A New America" is Matthew O'Neill, who also co-produces the project with Jon Alpert. Sheila Nevins serve as the executive producer, Sara Bernstein as the supervising producer, and Xochitl Dorsey as the producer, Deadline noted.
O'Neill and Alpert bagged an Oscar nomination for their documentary "China's Unnatural Disaster" about the 2008 Sichuan Province earthquake, Rolling Stone wrote. Mottola, on the other hand, previously worked with Lopez, Shakira, Mariah Carey, Carly Simon, and Hall and Oates, among others.
