Microsoft's Cortana Android App Ready for Download! 5 Things You Need to Know
All Android users can now enjoy using Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana -- even with the absence of Windows.
Mashable reported that Microsoft released on Monday an early version of Cortana on Google Play, marking the first time it was made available to all users of Android.
In describing Cortana, Microsoft said it is "a clever new personal assistant." The application is often compared to Google Play and Apple's Siri. Cortana helps users manage calendars, track packages, search for files, communicate with the user and even tell tell jokes.
"The more you use Cortana, the more personalized your experience will be," Microsoft assured.
For those wanting to know more details, below is a list of its important uses:
1. It functions just like the Windows version
According to Mashable, Cortana enables users to list reminders, search the web and list important items on their calendars.
"The Android app also comes with the same 'notebook' feature, which lets you tweak Cortana's personalized recommendations for nearby restaurants, news alerts, weather updates, sports scored and other categories based on your previous habits and interests," added the same report.
With these features, it will be a breeze for Android users to locate the nearest place where they can eat or enjoy their free time.
2. Cortana is just a button-press away
Windows Blog indicated that they have made improvements on Cortana, like setting it as the destination app when you press the home button. This makes it easy launching the assistant application without any hassle.
3. Voice commands are still exclusive for Windows
It was, however, added in the Windows Blog report that there are still differences between Cortana for Windows and that for Android.
"For example toggling settings, opening apps or invoking Cortana hands-free by saying 'Hey Cortana' are only available on Windows for now," the report explained.
4. Cortana can read and understand e-mail
In an earlier Reuters report, Microsoft Research managing director Eric Horvitz said this technology has the capacity to "read and understand e-mails."
"We're defining the competitive landscape... of who can provide the most supportive services that make life easier, keep track of things, that complement human memory in a way that helps us get things done," Horvitz added.
5. iOS application also coming
Mashable said that a standalone iOS application is also being worked out by Microsoft, though important details have not yet been revealed by the company.
The Cortana Android application beta version can be accessed here, currently available in the US market. Microsoft is reportedly working on making it available in other markets really soon.
