Bears Send Guard Ryan Groy to Patriots in Exchange for LB Matthew Wells
In an effort to improve their roster of players, the Chicago Bears traded guard Ryan Gory to the New England Patriots in exchange for linebacker Matthew Wells.
According to ESPN, the Patriots' acquisition of the second-year guard would help the team improve their performance, especially with 24 players sidelined because of injuries and rehabilitation.
The trade will not be official until the guard passes a physical examination.
Groy became part of the NFL in 2014 as an undrafted agent from Wisconsin. He reportedly signed with the Bears and became part of the team's practice squad when the season opened.
"He was ultimately promoted to the 53-man roster and played in the final four regular-season games, with three starts," added ESPN.
NBC Sports SAId that Groy started for the last three games of the season.
Though he showed some great skills, the Bears apparently did not think he was what they needed.
When he joins the Patriots, NESN said Groy will be with players like Josh Kline, Ryan Wendell, Mark Asper, Chris Barker, Jordan Devey, Marcus Cannon, Cameron Fleming, Caylin Hauptmann, Bryan Stork, Tre' Jackson, David Andrews and Shaq Mason as the offensive team.
The targeted players to start as guards of the team for the season are Wendell and Jackson, though the former is still currently in the list of players who are physically unable to perform.
"Mason and Jackson have been taking first-team reps at guard but Mason's lack of experience as a pass blocker could preclude him from beginning the season as a starter," added NESN.
On the other hand, Andrews and Kline are also having problems with their performances while Stock is still recovering from an injury.
In May this year, Groy revealed that he was inspired to work harder with the death of his father,
"It's been a roller coaster the whole time. It definitely gets better day-by-day and it definitely gets better talking to each other and talking about old stories and bringing up the good stuff," he said in a Chicago Bears report.
The same report said that Gory's father, who was killed in an accident in Lake Tomahawk, has been the athlete's source of support for the longest time.
Ryan's father, Doug, was killed Feb. 19 in a snowmobile accident when he crashed into a tree off Birch Road in Lake Tomahawk, Wis.
Doug Groy was 55 years old.
"The toughest thing has been looking for answers. That was the person I would reach out to, that was the person I would go to for advice and support and all that kind of stuff," Groy said.
"He wasn't my only option, but he was definitely a huge one in my eyes. So that will definitely hurt every time I think about it."
