Diego Luna on Playing Womanizer Giacomo Casanova in Amazon Series 'Casanova': Adventurer Was 'Very Interesting'
Diego Luna discussed his portrayal of Italian playboy Giacomo Casanova in Amazon's new drama series.
The Mexican actor told Fox News Latino that the famous womanizer is an enigmatic and a "very interesting" character, adding that Casanova has the ability to "become many characters."
"You don't know who Casanova is from what you have been watching on film and TV," Luna told the news outlet. "Every time they portray this character they tend to go very easy to a cliché of the idea of this womanizer and amazing lover."
The 35-year-old actor added, "He was traveling and finding a way to fit in any circumstance."
Amazon's "Casanova" centers on "a little-known period in the life of one of 18th century's most famous playboys," Coming Soon wrote. Upon his exile from Venice, Casanova went to Paris at the dawn of the Enlightenment in an attempt to leave his reputation behind. This wasn't an easy feat for Casanova, and soon enough he finds plenty of prospects and intrigue in France's capital.
Aside from Luna, "Casanova" also stars Bojana Novakovic, Miranda Richardson, and Ben Daniels, Coming Soon listed. Sitting in the director's chair is Oscar nominee Jean-Pierre Jeunet ("Amelie"), with the script penned by Stuart Zicherman, who also wrote for FX's "The Americans." Serving as executive producers are Jeunet, Zicherman, and Electus' Ben Silverman.
This was not the first time that the infamous lover was brought to life on the big screen. In 2005, David Tennant portrayed Casanova in BBC's mini-series. The late Heath Ledger also played the title role in a Hollywood movie back in 2005, CNET pointed out.
"Casanova" debuts on Amazon on August 7. Watch the trailer below.
Diego Luna Talks Other Film Projects
While promoting "Casanova," Luna also talked about his plans to connect the film cultures of the U.S. and Latin America through his production label, Canana Films, Fox News Latino wrote.
According to Luna, last year's "Cesar Chavez" and the upcoming film "Mr. Pig" starring Maya Rudolph and Danny Glover -- movies which he both directed -- are there to help establish a bridge between the two production markets, the news outlet added.
"We are still divided. We have really allowed the borders to separate us and we don't get to see the movies that are done in Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia," he explained to Fox News Latino. "We have to think more as a whole, as a main market. There is more that connects us than disconnects us."
Luan continued, "As filmmakers, we have to think wider and audiences shouldn't stop that curiosity of what's going on down the border. We have amazing voices and now we need to connect those voices with an audience."
