'Empire' Season 2 Premiere Date, Cast & Spoilers: What is Mariah Carey's Role in Fox Music Drama?
Mariah Carey will reportedly join Fox's "Empire" as one of the music drama's guest stars in its upcoming second season.
The news was announced by "Empire" creator Lee Daniels at Carey's Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony on Wednesday, August 5, E! News reported. So far, not much else was revealed about the singer's role in the series starring Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon), Taraji P. Henson (Cookie Lyon), and Jussie Smollett (Jamal Lyon).
Carey previously worked with Daniels in 2009's "Precious" and 2008's "Tennessee," E! News noted. Her stint on "Empire" will also mark the recording artist's first major TV appearance aside from "American Dad," "Real Housewives of Hollywood," and in one episode of "Ally McBeal" back in 2002.
Smollett once said that he wants to see Carey in the show. "I keep saying, and I hope they can make this happen, because she's one of Lee's closest friends, I really want to see Mariah Carey on the show," he shared, as quoted by the news outlet.
Aside from the "Infinity" singer, Season 2 of "Empire" will also feature Ludacris, Alicia Keys, Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Kelly Rowland as Lucious' mother in flashbacks, and Marisa Tomei as a billionaire venture capitalist who gets involved with Empire Entertainment, E! News listed.
"Magic Mike XXL" actor Adam Rodriguez will also join the show's upcoming season as Cookie's love interest, the news outlet added. There's also Tyra Ferrell of "White Men Can't Jump" as a lawyer, and "The Wire" star Andre Royo as Thirsty Rawlings, also a lawyer with a dark past and who begins working alongside Lucious, TVLine wrote.
A separate report from TVLine added that Season 2 will feature "Men at Work" actor Adam Busch in a recurring role as well. According to Deadline, Busch will portray Chase One, "a sexy, gifted, avant-garde gay artist who's doing a photo shoot, and is infatuated with his male star."
TVLine noted that Busch's character "may encounter some blurred lines between his professional duties and his personal predilections."
Just recently, it was announced on Twitter that pop singer Becky G will guest star on the show's second season.
Season 1 of "Empire" also saw famous personalities making their appearances in the show, such as Raven-Symone, Rita Ora, Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Doog, Gladys Knight, Pattie LaBelle, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Estelle, E! News listed.
"Empire" will return on Fox on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9:00 PM. Watch Season 2's teaser below.
