'The 33' Movie Trailer, Cast & Release Date: See Antonio Banderas in Chilean Miner Drama [Watch]
The first official trailer for "The 33," the Chilean miner drama starring Antonio Banderas, is finally unveiled.
The sneak peek was released by Warner Bros and features Banderas as Mario Sepulveda, a miner who gets trapped underground on the day before his retirement. Watch the trailer below.
"That's not a rock, that's the heart of the mountain. She finally broke," the 54-year-old actor said in the trailer, as his character is seen covered in sweat and dirt. The men were trapped underground with a boulder twice the size of the Empire State Building blocking their only way to the cave's exit, Daily Mail wrote.
Also starring in "The 33" are Lou Diamond Phillips, Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, and Rodrigo Santoro, Deadline listed. Patricia Riggen directed the movie, with Mikko Alanne, Craig Borten, and Michael Thomas penning the screenplay based on Hector Tobar's book titled "Deep Down Dark."
Mike Medavoy, Edward McGurn, and Robert Katz serve as producers, a separate report from Deadline wrote.
The film focuses on the 2010 Chilean miners' "devastating circumstances, displaying the earth falling upon them in the Copiapo, Chile caves," Deadline noted. The ill-fated miners was buried deep underground for two months awaiting rescue "as the world watched and numerous countries sent help," including a NASA team from the U.S. and an American driller.
For those unacquainted with the August 5, 2010 tragedy that befell the Chilean miners, Indie Wire wrote that the cave-in took place at a San José copper mine. The workers, which were trapped 2,300 feet below the Earth and three miles from the entrance, were all miraculously alive after the ordeal.
In the face of danger, death, and hopelessness, the miners struggled to ration three days of emergency food and tried to provide optimism to each other, Daily Mail wrote. The 33 men suffered 100-degree Fahrenheit temperatures with scant food and water, while they are all shrouded in darkness.
"What I discovered was another story, one not told," Banderas said of working in the film, as quoted by Daily Mail. "It's the story we tried to do here. We tried to put a magnifying glass on human behavior that comes out in situations like this, when death is right in front of you."
The Spanish movie star didn't mind the physical challenges the shooting of the movie gave him. The actor said that his stomach "was very reduced" and that he had eyebags, but these further helped him in playing the role, the news outlet added.
"The 33" is slated for release in theaters on Nov. 13. It was shot in working mines in Colombia and Chile, The Wrap reported.
