'Narcos' Trailer, Cast & Air Date: Netflix Unveils Sneak Peek of Pablo Escobar Drama
A new trailer has been released for Netflix's drug cartel drama focusing on the life of Pablo Escobar.
The trailer for "Narcos" stars Wagner Moura as the notorious drug lord at the peak of his power as the leader of the Medellin cartel. Watch the trailer below.
"Narcos," a 10-episode series, tells the story of the cocaine drug trade's beginnings, "what fuels it and how many people died so far both violently on account of getting addicted," producer José Padilha told PEOPLE. Also starring are Pedro Pascal ("Game of Thrones") and Boyd Holbrook ("Gone Girl") as DEA agents Javier Peña and Steve Murphy, respectively.
Other cast members include Colombians Juan Pablo Raba and Manolo Cardona, Brazil's André Mattos, Mexico's Ana de la Reguera and Stephanie Sigman, Puerto Rico's Luis Guzman, and British actress Joanna Christie, The Hollywood Reporter listed.
The production team of "Narcos" aimed to entertain viewers, but they also worked with the real-life Peña and Murphy in order to deliver a historically accurate series based on Escobar's 1980's drug empire.
"Cocaine has had a huge negative impact on the lives of people all over the world," Padilha told PEOPLE. "It's important to show its history."
The producer also said that one of the most significant parts of creating "Narcos" is casting the actor who perfectly fits in the role of Escobar.
"We needed a great actor, at the right age, who understood the style of storytelling we were going for - and who could learn to speak Spanish fast with a Paisan accent," Padilha explained to the news outlet. "There are very few actors who can do all that. We made a list and got lucky with the first name we had on it: Wagner Moura."
Escobar was once described by Peña as the inventor of narco-terrorism, who caused the deaths of thousands of people and made Colombia the murder capital of the world during his time as the "King of Cocaine," The Wrap wrote.
"Narcos" is filmed in locations in Colombia, and is produced by Gaumont International Television for Netflix, with Eric Newman, Doug Miro, and Carlos Bernard serving as executive producers, The Hollywood Reported noted.
"Narcos" airs on August 28 at 12:01 AM PT on Netflix, as per PEOPLE.
The online streaming service has been releasing more Spanish content for its viewers in an effort to increase membership in Latin America. This includes "Club de Cuervos," which premieres on August 7 and will focus on the "members of a wealthy family who are battling to gain control of the beloved professional soccer team, Los Cuervos of Nuevo Toledo, after the patriarch of the family dies," NBC News reported.
