Costa Rica Not Sending Candidate to Miss Universe 2015 Following Donald Trump's Comments on Immigrants
Costa Rica will not be sending its candidate to the Miss Universe 2015 pageant due to Donald Trump's inflammatory comments against Mexican immigrants.
In a statement issued by Televisora de Costa Rica (Teletica), the network that organizes Miss Costa Rica scheduled in August, it was indicated that the winner of the contest will not push through for the Miss Universe despite of the country's 40-year-long relationship with the organization partly owned by the Republican presidential candidate and business magnate.
"For all of those decades the pageant has strived to unite the most diverse countries and cultures, it has carried out important humanitarian campaigns across the world, and it hasn't marginalized a single contestant based on the color of her skin, her religion or her ideas," Teletica said, as quoted by Fox News Latino.
The network continued, "Because of this, we reject the xenophobic and offensive statements by the owner of the Miss Universe pageant against our Mexican brothers and sisters, and therefore, against all Latin Americans."
The news comes after Mexico's pageant organizers also announced that it won't be sending candidates to the Miss Universe. Trump came under fire after he referred to Mexican immigrants as rapists, criminals, and drug dealers.
According to Teletica, they will only reconsider their decision if Trump "retracts his comments immediately and apologizes for his inadmissible statements, or if he separates himself completely from the organization of the pageant," Fox News Latino noted. The network's decision to pull out of the pageant is supported by the Miss Costa Rica participants.
Days after Univision and NBCUniversal have both refused to air the Miss USA pageant on July 12, Reelz has stepped in to fulfill the duties left behind by the two TV networks.
Stan Hubbard, CEO of Reelz, said that airing the pageant "should not be construed as anything political," CNN reported.
"This is television; this is entertainment," Hubbard said, as quoted by the news outlet. "An independent network like Reelz is able to look at this pageant, look at the contestants, look at the community, look at this American tradition ... and bring it to television."
Hubbard, however, clarified that he agrees with Univision and NBC's stance against Trump, adding that the presidential candidate's comments are "ridiculous," CNN wrote.
The widespread backlash surrounding Trump's inflammatory remarks also included Macy's. A separate report from CNN wrote that the department store is pulling out Trump's menswear collection from its merchandise, saying that the company "stands for diversity" and that it rejects discrimination. The company also said that they are "disappointed and distressed" over Trump's remarks.
"We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation," Macy's said in a statement, as quoted by CNN.
