Avril Lavigne Cries During Interview Over Struggle With Lyme Disease [Watch]
Avril Lavigne was moved to tears in an interview with "Good Morning America" when she recalled her struggle with Lyme disease in the latter part of 2014.
For the very first time, the punk rock princess opens up about her experience with the disease in front of the camera, saying that it was a very difficult time for her.
In the interview, she narrated how she lacked the energy to continue living especially after hearing hope-depleting statements from top doctors and specialists like "Why don't you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play the piano?"
According to her, this was because those, who were deemed as "experts" in the field of medicine, have barely an ounce of idea about the disease and even less on how to deal with it.
"I was seeing every specialist and literally the top doctors, and ... they would pull up their computer and be like, 'Chronic fatigue syndrome?'" she said, according to EW. She added, "This is what they do to a lot of people who have Lyme disease. They don't have an answer for them so they tell them, 'You're crazy.'"
The 30-year-old "Sk8er Boi" singer first gave hints about major "health issues" via a fan profile on Twitter, asking her fans to include her in their prayers.
Her struggle with the disease left many Avril fans worried, digging deeper into the details of her true condition.
People was the first to reveal the singer's real condition. According to the magazine, the singing superstar was not able to celebrate her 30th birthday in October last year because she felt terrible to even consider partying.
"I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed. My friends asked, 'What's wrong?' I didn't know," she explained to People.
After several months of feeling light-headed and lethargic and experiencing several misdiagnoses, the 30-year-old songstress was finally offered a sure answer to why she was feeling that way.
"I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move. I thought I was dying," she described her experience with the severe case of Lyme disease, adding that she had no idea a bite from a tick could lead to her devastating condition.
After five months of being bed-ridden, the singer finally found an expert on the disease and was able to put her life back on track while undergoing treatment.
"I think for me it's like a second shot at life. I want to go out there and truly do what I love, so I'm excited for life after this," she told ABC News.
She also expressed her utmost gratitude to her fans, who posted several get-well messages and videos that "touched" her "so deeply" and helped her through the challenge she faced at the time.
