Kyle Busch Claims Sonoma Raceway Victory! What’s Next For Him?
American racer Kyle Busch claimed victory at the Sonoma Raceway on Sunday and came back strong four months after that crash at the Daytona International Speedway that left him with a broken foot.
ESPN noted that Busch was still struggling with his surgically repaired foot when he crossed the finish line in an impressive win. The racer reportedly iced his foot prior to the race to alleviate the pain he was feeling. He achieved his desired results when he beat Jimmie Johnson and get his first Sprint Cup Series win in 35 races. He is expected to participate and perform well at the Chase Championships.
"Now I don't have to bust my butt and overdrive the car every week in order to get wins. Now I can just concentrate on running top-three, top-five, top-eight -- just getting those finishes and points. If we can do that, the points have got to come and fall on the line," Busch was quoted in the ESPN report as saying.
It can be remembered that last February, Busch got injured when he hit a wall during the Xfinity Series a day prior to the Daytona 500 event. Because of his injury, he was not able to participate in 11 races. It was a good thing his healing went pretty well that he was able to return to the race track last month.
According to ESPN, Nascar gave him a waiver when he returned to professional racing and made him eligible to compete for Chase.
"This is awesome, just unbelievable. I can't say enough about my medical team, everyone who got me back in shape and back on the race track. ... My foot hurts a little bit but not as bad as I expected. It actually hurt worse in practice," the racer added in a USA Today report.
He also noted that his team performed really well in the race despite problems.
"We got our work cut out for us, and we knew we did in the beginning. I certainly put us in a hole with a couple crashes already, but I have so much confidence in this race team," Busch added.
In addition, Sporting News noted that the racer's brother, Kurt, was emotional after his win because of all the hardships the former went through.
"It was emotional. I know (Kyle's) been through quite a bit; to have your leg broken, your foot shattered, to never (before) be injured and out of the car ... I don't know what that feels like, but I do know that working with Tony Stewart and having him go through rehab, rehab is very difficult, and it is a mental challenge," Kurt added saying that he is very proud of his brother's feat.
It was certainly a double victory for Bush as he was also able to prove to the entire racing world that he can rise from adversity and win races again.
