'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Stars Melissa Fumero & Stephanie Beatriz Grace Latina Mag August 2015 Cover
Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz, two of the lead stars of Fox's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," are Latina magazine's cover girls for the month of August.
Fumero and Beatriz portray the role of Amy Santiago and Rosa Diaz, respectively, on the Golden Globe-nominated comedy series. Together, the two talked to Latina magazine about their experiences in the entertainment business as Hispanics and on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."
When the TV series was just starting out, Beatriz admitted that the idea of having two Latinas on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" made her anxious and often doubted that she or Fumero will get axed at some point.
"I remember we would grab each other and go to the side and say, 'Do you think they will keep both of us?' Even for our first table read, we texted each other, 'I'm going to wear my hair straight.' We were so nervous about the two Latinas thing," Beatriz explained to Latina magazine.
Fumero, 32, was raised in New Jersey by Cuban parents, while Beatriz, 34, moved to Texas from Argentina at age 2 and has a Bolivian mother and a Colombian father. As a part of Hollywood's new generation of Latinas, Beatriz acknowledged that it's a good thing that television is growing more diverse as time passes by.
"If you look at the landscape of television right now, we are in a really exciting time, with shows like 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' 'Orange Is the New Black,' 'Jane the Virgin,' and 'How to Get Away with Murder.' There are so many different types of people right now on television. The light is coming through the cracks. You can't block it out anymore. It's changing," she told Latina magazine.
Fumero also revealed that she had to do improv when she auditioned for the comedy show. However, it was still a great experience for the actress because if she had known that she would do improvisational performance, she "would have gotten nervous about it," as quoted by Latina.
On a lighter note, Fumero admitted that she hates working out but does hot yoga. Beatriz, meanwhile, recounted about her love for reading books and the library when she was just a child.
Andy Samberg, who portrays Jake Peralta on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," commended Fumero and Beatriz for their contributions to the series.
"They are both highly skilled performers who don't have a mean bone in their body. And on set they're both complete goofballs. You couldn't ask for a lovelier cast; really sweet," the actor said, as reported by the magazine.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" also stars Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti, Terry Crews as Terry Jeffords, Andre Braugher as Ray Holt, Joe Lo Truglio as Charles Boyle, Joel McKinnon Miller as Scully, and Dirk Blocker as Hitchcock.
Latina's August issue will hit newsstands on July 7. Check out the photos from Fumero and Beatriz's cover shoot here.
