'Juntos' Singer Juanes to Perform in Pope Francis' September US Visit for World Meeting of Families 2015
Juanes is set to perform for Pope Francis in Philadelphia as part of the World Meeting of Families.
The event, which is scheduled on Sept. 26, will see the Colombian singer performing alongside Andrea Bocelli and The Philadelphia Orchestra, NBC News reported. Thousand are expected to come to Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Center City to see the pope, who also has tour stops in New York City and Washington, D.C.
"I am profoundly honored for the invitation to sing for the Pope Francisco. #ADiosLePido," Juanes tweeted recently, as translated by NBC News.
The 42-year-old singer also said that "our most important mission in this voyage of life is learning how to love, and what better way to do it than through family," Billboard quoted.
Prior to his performance for Pope Francis, Juanes will embark on his Loco De Amor summer tour dates across Europe and the United States, NBC News noted. Juanes recently collaborated with French EDM DJ Cedric Gervais on a song titled "Este Amor," a separate report from the news outlet wrote. The duo premiered the track at the Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida.
"I'm thrilled such incredible talent with tremendous global reach can join us on the Parkway," Philadelphia's Mayor Michael Nutter said at a news conference at the Pontifical North American College, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
He continued, "Our Parkway has seen many great performers of course . . . now I love Jay-Z and Beyoncé and of course Philly's own house band the Roots but there's something quite magical about the idea, the thought, the vision, of Pope Francis being on stage in our city with Andrea Bocelli, Juanes and the Philadelphia Orchestra all at the same time."
According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Philadelphia Orchestra will also attend the papal mass and supply the liturgical music for the Archdiocese of the state's 500-member choir.
The World Meeting of Families happens every three years and is aimed to strengthen familial relationships around the world, Billboard wrote. When it comes to choosing musical artists for the event, executive director Donna Crilley Farrell said that the idea is to "bring together performers that represented the world," the news outlet added.
According to Billboard, performing for the pope is deemed as a high honor for most Catholic Latin American acts. Other artists who have demonstrated their talents for former Pope John Paul II include Gloria Estefan in 1995, Argentina's Diego Torres in 2003, and Mexico's Lucero in 1997. In 2014, Argentine Martina Sotessel also sang for Pope Francis in Rome.
