'Midnight Sun' Movie to Star Bella Thorne & Patrick Schwarzenegger! Production, Plot Spoilers & What We Know So Far
Bella Thorne and Patrick Schwarzenegger are set to be the leads of "The Midnight Sun," a young adult adaptation film.
The YA love story is based on a 2006 Japanese movie that centers on 17-year-old Katie (Thorne), a girl who suffers from a disease that makes her skin highly sensitive to sunlight that even small exposures could be fatal. According to a report from Deadline, "fate intervenes when she meets Charlie (Schwarzenegger) and they embark on a summer romance."
Scott Speer is directing "The Midnight Sun" from a script written by Eric Kirsten, Deadline added. David Boies, James McGough, Alan Ou, Hiroki Shirota, and Speer serve as executive producers, while John Rickard and Zack Schiller are producing. Shooting for the film will kick off in September.
Thorne, 17, confirmed the news of her and Schwarzenegger's casting. "Proud to announce this YA romance film with my good friend Patrick and directed by Scott Speers!" she wrote on her Instagram page.
Schwarzenegger's mom, Maria Shriver, commended his 21-year-old son's starring role in the film. Shriver tweeted: "Congrats to @PSchwarzenegger! So exciting. Hard work pays off."
Back in April, Thorne, Schwarzenegger, and Speer dined at L.A.'s Mud Hen Tavern, and it turns out that the dinner was a business meeting. The actor/model said in a tweet that "cool stuff is coming," while Thorne posted a snapshot on Instagram of her and Schwarzenegger with a disclaimer saying that they are "just friends."
Thorne played CeCe Jones in Disney Channel's "Shake It Up," E! News wrote. She has also starred in films such as 2014's "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" and 2015's "The DUFF" alongside Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell. Thorne's upcoming film titled "Perfect High" will premiere in Lifetime on Saturday, June 27.
Aside from these, the actress' is also attached to the AwesomenessTV movie "Shovel Buddies" and in ABC Family's "Famous in Love," Deadline added.
"Pretty Little Liars" creator Marlene King is developing "Famous in Love" with Rebecca Serle, who wrote the novel the project is based on, MTV reported. According to Thorne, the upcoming series is about "a girl who gets plucked from obscurity from UCLA to star in a new sort of, like, 'Twilight' saga, and it's about her balancing fame and all of that with falling in love with two boys," the news outlet quoted.
"This mirrors a lot of my life," Thorne explained to MTV. "If you ever wondered what it's like to be Kristen Stewart or Natalie Portman or anything like that, we're taking you inside of that. And since we're all actors, we really understand the way it should be."
Aside from being a University of Southern California student, Schwarzenegger also acted in his first movie debut in 2006's "The Benchwarmers," E! News noted. He also has roles in 2012's "Stuck in Love," 2013's "Grown Ups 2," and 2015's "Dear Eleanor."
