Samsung Galaxy S5 Specs and Features Rumors: PLS LCD Displays to Reduce Production Costs
In a move that might turn off many, Samsung is rumored to utilize LCD displays instead of its traditional AMOLED screens on its next-gen Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 smartphones in an attempt to reduce production costs.
According to Korean news outlet ETNews, Samsung is reportedly interested in equipping its next-gen flagships with PLS LCD displays, the same kind used on the Nexus 10 and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets. The move would apparently save Samsung around 20 percent in production costs.
Bear in mind that Samsung has not officially confirmed the report, and it's hard to believe that Samsung would use LCD screens, especially given all the recent speculation about the Galaxy S5.
LCD displays are great as they provide excellent colors without straining the battery too much, but the decision to switch back from AMOLED to LCD seems a bit farfetched. Samsung recently revealed that it will start producing AMOLED displays with a 2K HD resolution, and the same high-resolution was spotted in a benchmark rumored to be the Galaxy S5. OLEDs have also been a selling point for Samsung, and it seems unlikely that company would ditch a niche it has carved for itself.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is rumored to sport a 5.25-inch 2K HD display, a 64-bit processor, 3GB RAM, a 4,000mAh battery, and a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera. If the rumor mill is correct, then Samsung will be releasing the Galaxy S5 in March or April 2014 in two models: a premium version with a metal casing and a normal variant with a typical Samsung polycarbonate shell.
