Carolina Herrera Slams Near-Naked Gowns Worn by Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez & Beyonce! Designer Says 'Cover Up'
Carolina Herrera doesn't approve of the near-naked gowns worn by Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Kim Kardashian.
The fashion designer, who is known for her elegant and classy creations, urges Hollywood A-list stars "to cover up," Fox News Latino reported.
"(Some designers think) it's so modern to be naked or almost naked. They think it's going to attract younger people if they do these dresses. No!" Herrera said in a recent interview with Washington Post. "The almost naked! Oh God! They're trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery."
The Venezuelan-American designer pointed to the celebrities who attended the most recent Costume Institute Gala, particularly Lopez, Kardashian, and Beyoncé. All three women donned gowns from other high-end fashion labels that left little to imagination, Washington Post noted.
The "American Idol" judge wore a sheer, red Versace gown while the "Drunk In Love" singer dressed in a bejeweled Givenchy Haute Couture creation by Riccardo Tisci, Fox News Latino reported. Kardashian also opted to display her curves in a sheet white gown.
Dismayed and disappointed, Herrera stressed out that modernism isn't an excuse to design dresses that come close to nudity.
"They're supposed to be fashion icons and they're not wearing anything," she explained to the news outlet. "It's an obsession now."
Herrera, 76, said that she is not a prude. In fact, she also designs gowns with plunging necklines for her customers, "but doing so requires care and a precise placement of the breasts underneath the fabric," Washington Post reported. According to the fashion designer, if the neckline plunges so much, a woman's breasts "look like fried eggs," adding that "fashion is about proportion."
A socialite who was born wealthy in Venezuela, Herrera was pushed into the world of fashion by legendary editor Diana Vreeland. The Carolina Herrera brand debuted in 1981 and was purchased by the luxury conglomerate Puig in 1995, Washington Post added.
Herrera's clientele includes the First Lady Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and actress Renee Zellweger, Washingtonian wrote. She recently opened a boutique for her CH Carolina Herrera line at CityCenterDC.
According to the fashion designer, contemporary is her mantra when it comes to designing classic dresses. She shares the style and approach with her close friend, the late designer Oscar de la Renta, who Herrera says always uses "the same silhouette for his designs, but with a modern twist," Washington Post noted.
"If you are a designer who is born hip and cool, then fine, you can do it. But I don't understand a designer who sees hip and cool [young designers] and they want to be like the newcomers. You confuse the client," Herrera further explained to the news outlet.
As for the secret to power dressing, she said that feeling feminine is a significant way to maximize confidence, Washingtonian reported.
