Amir Khan vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. September Match Deal Close? British Welterweight Says He’s The Next Mayweather
British boxer Amir Khan said he is prepared to go head to head with the undefeated and the still No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
According to Daily Mail, Khan said he has what it takes to be like Mayweather even if he ends up not fighting the American champ. He isl hoping that Mayweather will choose him to be his next opponent for his scheduled "last fight" on September 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"I'm going to be the next Floyd Mayweather whether I fight him or not. The pound-for-pound title means everything and I think fighting towards that is definitely the aim. All eyes will be on the welterweight division so it's about going for that now," said Khan.
The boxer added that if "The Money" retires without fighting him, then it will be about the pound-for-pound title that he will leave behind.
A similar Yahoo Sports report added that the fight between Khan and Mayweather could be possible, noting that there could already be negotiations ongoing between the two camps.
"I don't think I have ever been closer to getting the fight with Floyd Mayweather than I am at this moment. The indications are that I have strengthened my case with my win over Algieri and I believe there is every chance the fight could be confirmed within the next two weeks," Khan said.
Khan curiously watched Mayweather's fight against his longtime rival, Manny Pacquiao, last May, hoping to learn what "The Money" would into the ring on fight night and wishing he would be the next boxer up on that canvas against Mayweather.
"The Money's" father, Mayweather Sr., has also recognized that Khan will make a good match for his son.
"I'll tell you what I think my son should do in September - given he's fought all the hard-hitters - my son needs to get his contract and end it with an easy fight, he don't need no tough fights. Amir Khan? Yes, that'd be a good fight for him. My son would beat him, I know. Of course it would be easier than Pacquiao. Khan has a pretty decent jab but all the technical things, he can't do [them]," Mayweather Sr. said.
Though there is still no official word from Mayweather's camp, rumors are circling that he could either fight Khan or Marcos Maidana next.
In a similar SkySports report, Khan said he is so close to fighting Mayweather. "I'm touching distance away from that megafight and everyone wants to see it. Everywhere in America I was going, people were just talking about the Mayweather fight," he added.
In the coming weeks or months, it will be announced who Mayweather Jr. will be going up against in his last fight, and surely Khan is keeping his fingers crossed that it would be him.
