Viral Hawaii High School Graduation Performance Video Beats Conventional Ceremonies [Watch]
They say high school is the best years of one's life, and most of us may have to agree with that. Recently, one Hawaii school decided to have a blast for their graduation ceremonies, to wrap up their students' epic high-school years in a fun and memorable experience.
Veering away from the traditional monotonous and somber graduation rites, the Kahuku High School seniors have put up a show, to the delight of their families and other spectators in the crowd. Graduates sang and danced in a medley of popular contemporary songs such as Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" and Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," Yahoo News reports.
The graduating class wrapped up the nine-minute performance with "Kaipahua Kura." As per the Youtube user who posted the video, the "Kaipahua Kura" is their own version of "Haka" or the ceremonial war dance original to the Maori people of New Zealand.
Today, the ritual has gained popularity as it was performed by many New Zealand national teams in sports before their international matches, and before their bewildered opponents.
The choreography and the performance, as a whole, were rehearsed in just a matter of three days, with the help of returning alumni. They also had to mix up some of the lyrics to make it more apt to their "journey" from pre-school to their launch into society as graduates, according to the Star Advertiser.
"It's been pretty magical for our seniors and also for our community," said Walter Santiago, vice principal for Kahuku. "What everybody's seeing right now on the Internet is really the heartbeat of our community, of all our communities here in Kahuku."
The video has now gone viral and racked up more than 3.5 million views. It was also featured on the Today show and Good Morning America on Tuesday, says the Star Advertiser. The student population of the school is composed of Hawaiians, Polynesians, Samoans and Tongans, among other ethnicities.
As per Santiago, the school's graduation ceremonies have always been in festive atmosphere. He believes that the event is a good venue for their graduating seniors to express their pride and let out their emotions for their alma matter.
The seniors of Oahu North Shore's Kahuku High also danced to the tune of "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, the Jackson 5's "ABC," and performing "Nae Nae" and "Whip" to the song "Watch Me" by Silento, as noted by theroot.com.
Congratulations Kahuku High graduates and to all the class of 2015!
