Ed Sheeran Sings Iron Maiden: Should 'Sweet Mary Jane' Singer Try More Heavy Metal? [Listen]
Ed Sheeran may be among the sweetest singers out there, but in a compilation sketch with Jimmy Fallon on Monday's "The Tonight Show," Taylor Swift's best friend proved that he can do more than just sing soulful music, he can also make people fall in love with heavy metal.
Fallon, who played the role of spokesman Steve Joshua, described Sheeran's "compilation" CD to be for those who "enjoy the morbid and disturbing themes of heavy metal music, but wish it had a more cheerful, pleasant sound."
As Rolling Stone noted, Sheeran grabbed his guitar for the stint and played a couple of heavy metal classics done in his own musical style, beginning with a cover of Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills." He also delivered a great performance of "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit.
To go with the "Ed Sheeran Sings Heavy Metal" album is a bonus disc for another compilation: "Ed Sheeran Sings Hardcore Rap." For the preview, he sang a version of Ty Dolla $ign's "Paranoid."
Other than his new heavy rock and hardcore rap abilities, the 24-year-old singer seems to have ditched his innocent and boring image by writing a song dedicated to marijuana. According to the Independent UK, he debuted "Sweet Mary Jane" in a hip hop-esque beat on the Forest Hills Stadium featuring lyrics like "I woke up early looking out my bedroom window at the Amsterdam sky / Oh Baby I was high last night / Café clouds and red lights" and "I draw you down into my chest / that's where it feels the best."
He also referred to the drug as "the one."
While many Twitter users applauded Sheeran for making a song about cannabis sound lovely, others were not as open to embracing a darker side to the British sensation, with concerned YouTube user Tracy Whitcomb, saying, "Love him and the song is extremely catchy, but I'm disappointed. Ed needs to lay off the alcohol and weed. Seems like he's getting a little too caught up in the things that could lead to his downfall. I'm not a fan of glorifying drugs through music, but I also just hope he takes better care of himself, including cutting out the smoking. Ed is an absolute gift to music. Hoping he's able to share that gift with us for years to come."
Swift's BFF is not the first to sing about Marijuana, though. Miley Cyrus and Snoop Dog also had their own anthem called "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" as does 1975 with their song, "Chocolate," The Independent added.
Do you think Sheeran is as adorable as his heavy rock star and hardcore rapper version?
