Apple Watch Receives First App From Google With 'News & Weather': Learn How Feature Works
Google has just debuted its first Apple Watch App with "Google News and Weather" which is unusual, considering Apple Inc.'s exclusivity when it comes to their gadgets and apps. However, as Tech Crunch noted, it seems that the Apple Watch is ready to open up to third-party applications, and it started with some 3,500 apps that became available after its launch in April.
Apple Inc. has already been working hand in hand with big names such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and it seems Google is considering to provide more apps to the iOS platform, beginning with "News and Weather."
But what does the app do?
According to The Verge, even though the app is called "News and Weather," it seems that the app only offers news on Apple Inc.'s smartwatch, letting users swipe between the top headlines for the day. Additional photos can also be seen, but as far as the news goes, you can only read the headlines, not the entire articles.
While it may be strange, considering that there's nothing much you can get from reading only the headlines, it does have a Force Touch option where users can add the news but to the Safari reading list, and while it may seem like a good idea, there are also other choices as to where you can get your news on mobile, including NYT Now, CNN, Circa, and many more.
Apple Insider speculated that the inability of Google's Apple app to show even article summaries indicate that despite being available for iOS users, Apple Inc. has still limited the syncing operations to first-party versions, which, in all honesty, is not entirely surprising.
The app features are pretty basic, however, there is no news as to the appearance of other Google apps, like Gmail or Inbox, Search, Calendar, or Hangouts, which Google should be working on soon.
At the end of the day, as reported by the International Business Times, Google, despite having its own line of smartwatches, is a company that generates most of its revenue from software usage, and not hardware sales, explaining why they reached out to the iOS systems for the sales of their apps despite their bitter rivalry with Apple Inc.
Have you downloaded the Google app onto your Apple device? Do you think the tandem works, or should the companies just stay as rivals as far as gadget hardware and software are concerned?
