"John Wick 2" is officially moving forward.

The news was announced by Lionsgate's President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions Jason Constantine, ComingSoon.net reported. Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the main character, with David Leitch and Chad Stahelski back in the director's chair from a script by Derek Kolstad.

"With such tremendous fan and critical support for 'John Wick,' we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell," Constantine said, as quoted by ComingSoon.net. "We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around."

The sequel to the October 2014 hit will be released through Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment and will be produced by Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk, who also produced the original film. Constantine and Eda Kowan are set to oversee the project, ComingSoon.net noted. "John Wick 2" will be sold by Lionsgate International to have an international release at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

A release date for the follow-up is yet to be announced.

The first "John Wick" movie was produced with a $20 million budget and grossed more than $78 million at the worldwide box office, the news outlet added. The adrenaline-filled thriller centered on Reeves' retired hitman character seeking vengeance on a sadistic mobster who stole his prized car and killed his Beagle puppy, which is a gift from Wick's dead wife.

"John Wick" also starred Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Michael Nyqvist, Willem Dafoe, Bridget Moynahan, Ian McShane, John Leguizmo, and Dean Winters, a separate report from ComingSoon.net wrote.

Leitch and Stahleski own and operate 87Eleven Action Design, a choreography studio that creates fight sequences and trains stuntmen for some of Hollywood's blockbuster movies. Speaking about "John Wick" in an interview with ComingSoon.net, the filmmakers said that the flick aimed at giving the audience breathtaking action scenes - which displays extreme violence mixed with deadpan humor.

"We wanted to set a tone of the movie where you could have fun and you could experience the violence of the choreography we wanted to show in a non-threatening way," Leitch told the news outlet. "It was really important for us to find beats of humor and to make sure the world was heightened and had a comic book sensibility so that we could get away with the choreography we were trying to demonstrate."

Fans would have for quite some time for the sneak peek of "John Wick 2." In the meantime, watch the original film's trailer below.
