Jon Jones’ Reebok Contract Terminated Following UFC Title Strip; Decision ‘Effective Immediately’
After he was stripped of his light heavyweight title, Jon Jones' Reebok endorsement contract was also terminated following his involvement in a hit-and-run incident which injured a pregnant woman on Sunday.
"In light of recent events, we have made the decision to terminate our contract with Jon Jones, effective immediately," Reebok's statement read as quoted by MMA Fighting.
MMA Weekly added that Jones was among the fighters who got individual endorsement deals with Reebok which was separate from the agreement of the apparel company with the UFC.
"The UFC signed a six-year-deal with Reebok last December to make the company its exclusive outfitter. When the uniform policy takes effect in July, all athletes under the promotion's banner will be required to wear Reebok apparel at UFC events," Sherdog explained.
Some of the fighters who have individual contracts with Reebok are Ronda Rousey, Conor McGregor and Paige VanZant, MMA Weekly said.
In another article, MMA Fighting noted that Jones had a contract with Nike but he lost it when the company decided to move away from its involvement with MMA.
On Sunday, Jones reportedly figured in a hit-and-run accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when his SUV beat a red light and hit another car with Vanessa Sonnenberg, a pregnant woman, aboard. The woman broke her arm because of the accident. He was briefly taken into police custody after an arrest warrant was issued against him and was released a few hours after turning himself in and paying a $2,500 bail.
MMA Fighting said he was released from the Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center where he was booked for a felony charge of leaving an accident scene. According to Fox Sports, Sonnenberg was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated for a fractured wrist and arm. A police report of the incident detailed that the woman felt pain after her vehicle got hit by another car.
"I am pregnant and I feel like I am going to pass out. My arm is hurting all the way up and my husband is going to take me to the hospital," Sonnenberg was quoted in the police report as saying.
The UFC has suspended Jones indefinitely and removed him from the UFC fighter rankings. As his replacement for his upcoming fight against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23, in Las Vegas, the UFC picked Daniel Cormier, according to ESPN.
"For us to go in and have to strip him of his title and suspend him is not fun, but you know what they say: The show must go on," UFC president Dana White said on "Fox Sports Live".
