Spring Break Gang Rape Caught on Cell Phone Video in Panama City; 2 Students Charged
Two college students have been charged for sexually assaulting a young woman lying unconscious on a Florida beach in broad daylight.
Delonte' Martistee, 22, and Ryan Austin Calhoun, 23, of Alabama were charged and arrested on Friday with sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, the Bay County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Both are students of Troy University in Alabama, Daily Mail reported.
Police authorities discovered the video of the sexual assault while investigating an unconnected shooting incident, Daily Mail wrote. The clip showed a 19-year-old girl surrounded by several men while passed out on a beach chair.
Hundreds of people were present in the beach while the sexual assault was being filmed, which happened between March 10 and 12 when Troy students were on their Spring Break. According to the police's official statement, no one in the beach made no effort to stop the alleged attack on the victim, the news outlet noted.
Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen described the video as "probably one of the most disgusting, repulsive, sickening things that I have seen this year on Panama City Beach, and I have seen a lot of them," NBC News quoted, adding that the incident bears resemblance to "wild animals preying on a carcass laying in the woods."
"Within 10 feet from where this is happening there are hundreds of people standing there watching, looking, seeing, hearing what is going on," McKeithen added. The police department expects to arrest more suspects, NBC News noted.
Panama City News Herald reported that the alleged victim told deputies she suspected she might have been drugged before the assault, but was afraid to file a report because she couldn't remember much of what happened. McKeithen stated that the young woman "knows something happened, but she doesn't know what happened."
According to WSFA, Troy University officials have confirmed that both Martistee and Calhoun were suspended. Martistee has been removed from the university track team due to the incident.
Troy police sent the recording of the sexual attack to the Bay County Sheriff's Office on April 2, WSFA reported. Bay County police then identified the victim "and determine the incident took place on the beach behind Spinnaker Beach Club." Troy authorities helped Bay County officials to identify the perpetrators.
According to McKeithen, someone was overheard in the video saying, "she isn't going to know," before putting his hand inside the victim's bikini bottoms.
"This is such a traumatizing event for this girl," McKeithen said in the press conference, as quoted by Daily Mail. "No one should have to fear this would happen in Panama City Beach, but it does."
WSFA noted that Spring Break arrests have tripled since last year in Panama City Beach. The alleged sexual attack, according to McKeithen, "draws the line in the sand" for Bay County police. He also added that the police department intends to enforce more strict Spring Break regulations.
