Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S6: Release Date, Specs, Features & Price Roundup
Unveiled in this year's Mobile World Congress, the Samsung Galaxy S6 continues to build hype among followers and prospective buyers, most specially that its release is days away. Launching with a dual-edge companion, the device is reviewed as 2015's first great smartphone, and more interestingly, the best one to date.
While all the excitement surrounding the S6 is infectious, rumor mills have begun churning gossip about the line's next iteration. At this point, the device is easily called the Samsung Galaxy S7, and it looks to advance everything present in the current flagship.
We've curated the latest information aimed at the alleged sequel, to see how they fare against the Galaxy S6. Check them out below.
Release Date
Before we get into specs, note that the Galaxy S7, initially, is rumored to launch in Q4 2015. That would be months from the time of this writing.
Later on, it is said that the new flagship will take off its wraps in 2016's first quarter. In the most logical sense, this seems to be plausible, since later Galaxy S-models are showcased around the same time frame.
Display
Recent reports suggest that the Galaxy S7 might come on its own, without the Edge companion sported by its predecessor. However, this doesn't mean curved displays are out for Samsung -- on the contrary, they seem to be vital for the company's next flagship.
Citing information from South Korean website ETNews, AndroidPIT took note of a Samsung exec's remarks, who reportedly said, "The expansion is inevitable because it has been announced that Samsung Electronics have requested of 8 million flexible panels per month for 'Galaxy S7.'"
That sounds almost like a confirmation, but it's worth pointing that a "Galaxy S7 Edge" has not been mentioned. Hence, AndroidPIT gave a thought that flexible displays may actually be integrated into the standard flagship.
In figures, the Galaxy S7 is purported to come with a 5.5-inch, 4K Super AMOLED display.
The Galaxy S6, on the other hand, packs a 5.1 inch screen in a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. This is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
Processor & RAM
Speculations have it that the Galaxy S7 houses an octa-core Snapdragon processor clocked at 3.0+ GHz, coupled with 4 GB of RAM. Alternatively, an Exynos 16-core big.LITTLE chip is also expected.
Samsung has chosen its in-house, 14 nm FinFET Exynos 7420 SoC processor for the Galaxy S6, Android Authority noted. This is married to 3 GB of RAM.
Camera
The Galaxy S7 is touted to arrive with a whopping, 30 MP main camera, supported by ultra low light sensitivity sensor. Its front snapper, on the other hand, is expected to capture around 7 MP.
The Galaxy S6 shoots at 16 MP through its rear camera, with a resolution as high as 2988 x 5312 pixels. Its selfie snapper captures at 5 MP.
Other Key Features
Samsung is reportedly working on a technology that could make Apple's fingerprint scanning obsolete, BGR said. This is called "Iris on the Move," expected to launch within a customized Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 at ISC West 2015.
The outlet sees it possible for Samsung to incorporate the said feature into its next flagship.
It would also be interesting to see a more durable Galaxy S7. In case you haven't heard, the Galaxy S6 Edge recently went through a bend test, where it was found to bend and break at 110 and 149 lbs, respectively.
These are just few points on how Samsung's latest flagships may differ. In the meantime, Galaxy S7 rumors are best taken with healthy pinches of salt.
Price
The Galaxy S6's pricing varies, with major carriers offering different payment schemes. More information are available here.
No specific retail figures are out for the Galaxy S7, but for an insight, igalaxys7samsung.com wrote that the device "would be coming at a very high price."
