Eva Mendes Sorry for Sweatpants Comment, Blames Orange Crocs Instead!
Eva Mendes has backtracked on her comment regarding sweatpants being the number one cause of divorce in America.
In a statement posted on her Instagram page, Mendes issued an apology following her controversial remarks about the casual piece of garment. She wrote: "Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you're the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce. Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs."
The post was accompanied by a snapshot of the loungewear.
According to The Telegraph, the 41-year-old actress said, in an interview with Extra, that her staple fashion sense is "feminine." When asked if she wears more comfortable clothing, she exclaimed, "You can't do sweatpants . . . ladies, number one cause of divorce in America, sweatpants, no!"
Mendes' remarks, though intended as a joke, drew outrage from people on social media outlets, particularly on Twitter, The Telegraph wrote. The actress' longtime partner, Ryan Gosling, with whom she shares a daughter with named Esmeralda Amada, defended Mendes' statement.
Gosling tweeted: "Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That's right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter." He followed the post with: "Word to the wise. Don't joke about sweatpants or North Korea. Real hot button issues. Trust me."
Mendes and Gosling started dating back in 2011 after filming their movie "A Place Beyond the Pines." The couple's daughter was born on September 12 last year, Daily Mail reported.
Speaking about the inspiration behind their daughter's name, Mendes told Violet Grey that she and Gosling got it from their favorite character Esmeralda in the Victor Hugo novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Amada, on the other hand, is the actress' grandmother's name which means "beloved" in Spanish.
