‘Ghostbusters’ Movie Reboot Release Date & Cast News: Channing Tatum to Lead All-Male Pack?
It's only been a few months since we got word of an all-female cast for "Ghostbusters," but according to Deadline, the Paul Feig film starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon will have an all-male counterpart with Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt in the lead.
The all-male spinoff will be the first project of "Ghost Corps," a subsidiary of Sony. The project will be lead by Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykrod, who were the original creatives of the "Ghostbusters" franchise, with Joe and Anthony Russo producing, and will be penned by Drew Pearce ("Iron Man 3"). Channing Tatum, Peter Kiernan, and Reid Carolin are also going to be producers of the film.
Cinema Blend reported that the news is not entirely surprising, considering that it was one of the details revealed from the Sony-hacking scandal. With Tatum confirmed to be in line to produce, there is a big possibility that he will end up playing one of the Ghostbusters in the spinoff.
"Ghostbusters" creative Ivan Reitman explained about the project, "We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy."
He also added, "Paul Feig's film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He's got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers' next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It's just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies."
While details about the all-male cast are still scarce, the all-female reboot will begin shooting in summer. According to Screen Rant, Feig has been criticized in his decision to have an all-women cast, however, it was also pointed out that an all-male film may be deemed by fans as unnecessary as well.
However, the Russo brothers will be producing the all-male film with Tatum, and they have been proven to be apt at action and comedy works. Tatum's acting skills are also, by no means amateurish, as seen on his "Jump Street" movies, proving him to be able to balance action and comedy.
Paul Feig's all-female "Ghostbusters" will be in theaters on July 22, 2016. The all-male cast release date is yet to be announced.
What do you think of this all-female and all-male film casting choices, is it too much or would it be fun to watch?
