'Star Wars Rebels’ Season 2 Release Date & Trailer: New Cast & Plot Spoilers Out!
While everyone is waiting for "Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens," children are looking forward to the next season of "Star Wars Rebels," an animated series from Disney XD.
For its sophomore season, it has been reported by Deadline that Sarah Michelle Gellar has joined the voice cast, alongside her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. Other cast members include David Oyelowo, Vanessa Marshall, Steve Blum, Tiya Sircar and Taylor Gray.
Executive producer and Supervising Editor Dave Filoni said in a statement via Variety, "We're thrilled to have Sarah Michelle Gellar on board for season two," said executive producer and supervising director Dave Filoni. "She is a true 'Star Wars Rebels' fan, and her passion undoubtedly comes through in the voice recording sessions."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show, which has been greenlighted by Disney in May 2013, launched on October 3 on Disney, and on October 6 on Disney XD. The animated series has garnered 49 million viewers on its first season.
Taking place sometime between "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" and "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope," the series was reportedly set during the time when the Empire was securing the galaxy and hunting down the rest of the Jedi Knights.
Before the series premiered, Disney has already renewed "Rebels" for a second season, with Disney Worldwide president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh saying, "The global expectations for this series could not have been any higher. And I am proud to say that the team at Lucasfilm has delivered something that has surpassed even that incredibly high bar - artistically and thematically,"
LucasFilm VP of the creative development, Kiri Hart, also loved the idea of another season, adding, "We all love making Rebels, so we couldn't be happier that it's moving into a second season. Our fantastic creative team is dreaming up new stories for the crew of the Ghost that will expand their experience of the galaxy and deepen their heroes' journeys. The fan response to the show has been amazing, humbling and inspiring. We're looking forward to the adventure ahead."
For its second season, Variety reported that recurring appearances of fan-favorite characters will also be seen, among them are Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano.
Cinema Blend pointed out that bringing Darth Vader in the second season may present some issues regarding the franchise timeline. However, with compelling characters and original ideas that is evident in the production of the series, they may be able to lay the foundation of the story properly by the time the second season is in play.
As of present, there has been no news yet what role Gellar will play, as Comic Book Movie noted that Disney has been keeping it a secret. However, do you think she will be playing the role of an established character, or are they casting the actress in a role created especially for her?
