iPhone 5s vs. iPhone 5c Sales in Japan: New Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhones Represent 76 Percent of New Smartphones in Japan
Apple Inc.'s presence in Japan has been helped with the addition of mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo selling the Cupertino-based company's iPhones, but a new report shows the newest smartphones made a bigger mark than expected.
According to Kantar Worldpanel, via Twitter, Apple represented 76 percent of the Japanese smartphone sales during October. Of the aforementioned percentage in Japan, 61 percent were from mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo.
The smartphone sales figures in Japan are important for analysts as Japan is considered to be the second-best iPhone market after the United States and soon China.
NTT DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile carrier with more than 60 million subscribers. The mobile carrier has previously resisted selling Apple's iPhones but started in 2013 as the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s launched
The iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s launched during the weekend of Sept. 20. Apple confirmed 9 million units of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were sold during its first weekend. Apple didn't reveal specific numbers for the iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c. The 9 million units for both phones were 4 million units more than the first-weekend sales of the iPhone 5 in September 2012, which sold 5 million units.
Since October, the iPhone has rolled out in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, and Taiwan, to name a few.
The features for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are, for the most part, similar specifications as the discontinued iPhone 5, such as the 4-inch Retina Display with 1,136x640 resolution, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, 1080p HD video recording camera, to name a few. The iPhone 5s, however, features a larger f/2.2 aperture for the rear-facing camera with the aim of improving low-light photography. The iPhone 5s utilizes the A7 processor chip with 64-bit architecture, which plays a critical role with the Touch ID.
