Conan O’Brien Says Cuba Trip May Not Be Bad Diplomacy
Conan O'Brien's special episode of his TBS talk show "Conan" will feature him mingling with the citizens in Havana City, Cuba. Despite the lack of preview from the episode -- which is still being edited -- O'Brien revealed a few highlights from his 4-day trip, which included mingling with the locals and immersing himself in the culture.
According to a report from ABC News, the TV host attempted to "play authentic Cuban music" and to dance rumba. He also visited a cigar factory "where 400 virtuosos make cigars," and attempted to make one.
In addition, O'Brien tried to learn more Spanish words, with a special focus on the language's slang. He also ate a meal at an out-of-the-way paladar, which is a family-run restaurant in a Cuban home, the news outlet noted.
The 51-year-old comedian explained that he wants his trip in Havana to be a clear cut mission. For him, the people in the capital "couldn't be warmer and nice," ABC News wrote.
"I do not want this to be a snarky comedy take. And I don't want to be political. I want to go as a sort of comedian who is making fun of himself and make the Cuban people laugh." O'Brien remarked, as reported by the news outlet. "Maybe it isn't a bad form of diplomacy to send a comedian over. Maybe that's not a bad first wave."
O'Brien also added that the Cubans are interested in knowing how Americans feel about them.
"I told them Americans disagreed on everything, but in polls about whether we should normalize relations with Cuba, we are overwhelmingly in favor of it. They were happy to hear that," the entertainer revealed, as quoted by ABC News.
The TV host and 10 crew members traveled to Havana after being invited by the Cuban Ministry of Culture, PEOPLE reported. What prompted O'Brien to bring "Conan" to the country is President Barack Obama's re-establishment of the United States' relations with Cuba.
During the trip, O'Brien, who is known for his sense of humor, clarified that the visit to Cuba was far more than the laughs. True enough, aside from getting the citizens to laugh at his antics, the special episode was also made with a documentary-feel in it, the news outlet wrote.
"Our thing was: Let's approach this from the most fundamental level, which is, I'm going, I'm trying to do my schtick over there with these people, seeing if I can connect in some way and make some friends," he explained, as quoted by PEOPLE.
The special episode will air on TBS on Wednesday, March 4, at 11 PM EST.
