UFC 187 Fight Card: Jon Jones vs Anthony Johnson for Memorial Day Main Fight
It will be a bout between Jon Jones and Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 where Jones will defend his light heavyweight title in Las Vegas.
This matchup will be the main fight of the Memorial Day card as the Jones' "nearly perfect" record of (21-1) will be tested by Johnson's returning talent, MMA Weekly reported.
The same article explained that Jones has not failed to defend his title since he won it four years ago. Daily Mail, however, noted that he has recently been questioned for using illegal substances after he failed a routine screening last December.
He has already apologized for the incident and said that he did not want to make up any excuse for what happened.
"A coward would sit here and try to come up with an elaborate reason or try to blame something. I'm not going to blame my friends or pressure. I did it at a party; I messed up. It wasn't a mistake because I consciously did it," Jones was quoted by Daily Mail as saying.
The report added that Jones needs to be really careful as his opponent has also remained unbeaten since 2012 and that his most recent victory was a first-round TKO against Alexander Gustafsson.
According to MMA Fighting, Johnson is one of "the great turnaround stories in MMA" after he missed weight on some matches but picked up from where he slumped on his career and started winning fights.
It is expected to be quite a battle between the two as both their skills will be tested by the strengths and weaknesses of the other. Jones will be coming in as the top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world while Johnson will come prepared with a winning streak and an integrity to build up.
Aside from the fight, a co-main event will feature Chris Weidman vs Vitor Belfort for the world middleweight belt.
MMA Fighting said that Weidman and Belfort were scheduled to fight at UFC 184 on Feb. 28, but it did not push through after Weidman injured himself during training. The undefeated Weidman who has a 12-0 record will defend his title for the third time against the 37-year-old Belfort who has been idle since 2013.
Also fighting during Memorial Day are Khabib Nurmagomedov and Donald Cerrone who will go against each other for the lightweight title. The two fighters have been reportedly trying to fight against each other since last year.
Cerrone has won seven straight fights while Nurmagomedov will be coming back from a knee injury.
These exciting fights will be something to look forward to by the fans as these will match experienced fighters with immense talent in mixed martial arts which the public maybe has not witnessed before.
