Gears of War News: Microsoft VP Discusses Series, Xbox One Entry into Franchise

The Gears of War series was a monstrous success for the Xbox 360, which makes it all the more suspicious that there has been no talk of the series coming to the Xbox One. But now, Microsoft Studios vice president Phil Spencer has spoken to Kotaku about the future of the Xbox One, and the executive gave some details about the future of the franchise.

Spencer revealed that the franchise is not dormant, and there is internal talk at Microsoft about how best to continue to the gears of War series:

"I'm a huge fan of the franchise...I want to continue to work with Gears. I think there's a lot of life left in that franchise. We had an internal discussion on it even yesterday. It's something that's active in discussion about what we can do with Gears."

However, the executive did clarify that "there's nothing even pending that I'm holding to announce,"  which means that fans of the series will have to keep playing through the latest entry into the series, Gears of War: Judgment, for the foreseeable future. Spencer did say that Microsoft understands the importance the franchise has and is trying to put fans and gamers in general first:

"I understand the importance of the franchise to the Xbox platform and to gamers--I'd say gamers first. It'd be great to do something forward with that franchise."

In an intriguing twist, Spencer was asked about the possibility that the Gears of War franchise could travel to new platforms besides the Xbox or PC, and he deferred to developer Epic to answer that question:

"It's Epic's franchise...You and I both know that. I can't make any assurances about anybody else's franchise. It's Epic's game and we have to talk to them about a partnership and what they want to do. As you know, you probably know right now they're more focused on other areas of their business right now."

While the possibility of Gears of War coming to the PlayStation 4 would be huge news in and of itself, there must be a Gears of War game for that to even happen. Currently, Epic only has the game Fortnite on its roster for upcoming games. that game is coming only to PC, so it will remains to be seen what Epic has in store beyond that. Until then, fans will just have to dream about next gen chainsaw executions.
