Benedict Cumberbatch & Sophie Hunter Marry on Valentine’s Day; ‘Cumberbabies’ Next?
It's a sad day for single ladies when Valentine's Day comes and chocolates and flowers appear everywhere. But it was an even more devastating Valentine weekend for Benedict Cumberbatch fans when their favorite actor married fiancée Sophie Hunter on the day of hearts.
Cumberbatch and Hunter tied the knot on the Isle of Wight on Valentine's day with their family and friends as their witness, and according to ABC News, it as a "magical day" indeed.
The couple announced their engagement in November in The Times newspaper in London like an ordinary couple would: an eight-line notice on the births, deaths, and marriages section. Cumberbatch told People magazine, "It's what I would have done if I wasn't sort of famous. It's what we do. It's a kind of traditional thing to do."
He also added, "I don't tweet or do social media. It's too impersonal. I would rather do what we did, and have people find it, and not see us from some ... grainy footage staring lovingly into each others' eyes with a ring on someone's finger. I wanted it to be ours."
BBC notes that guests at the wedding included some of Cumberbatch's close celebrity friends, Tom Hiddleston, and "Sherlock" co-star Martin Freeman, who also served as his Best Man. Andrew Scott, who played Sherlock's nemesis in the series, was also said to be in attendance.
After the wedding, the actor shared, "my mother is also waiting for Cumberbabies." She does not have to wait too long, though, as Cumberbatch's new wife is already pregnant.
The honeymoon may have to be kept on hold, however, as the actor will be jetting back to Los Angeles by next week for the Academy Awards, where he was nominated for his role in "The Imitation Game" as Alan Turing, the mathematician who served as a code breaker in the Second World War.
Although a lot of fans moved on from their broken hearts once news of Cumberbatch's engagement to Hunter broke, there are some who refused to accept the fact, and as recorded by Cosmopolitan, a major Cumberbatch fan had a meltdown upon hearing news of the actor's marriage. She was so mad about Cumberbatch marrying Hunter, that she called the whole thing "a nightmare." She even said, "I hate your guts and I'm celebrating your funeral." Unfortunately, the Tumblr account from which the open letter appeared has already been taken down.
How do you feel about Cumberbatch's wedding: are you happy for him, or, like the fan on Tumblr, are you going to curse the day he said "I do"?
