Ray Rice NFL News & Update: Football Star Offered $1M for Spox Duty - But There’s a Catch
Former Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice is looking at a possible big pay amounting to $1 million after a fantasy football website offered him a contract to be its spokesperson.
According to TMZ, ProDraftLeague.com offered to sign Rice to be an official PRO Draft League Fantasy Insider but noted that if he hits his wife again, they will get their money back.
In an exclusive interview with TMZ, website CEO Mark Tadros explained the reason why they gave Rice an offer. He said, "Mr. Rice has shown deep remorse for his act of domestic violence and I feel he deserves a second chance."
It was detailed in the TMZ report that the contract will be for a year with the base salary of $500,000 and an additional $500,000 in bonuses. The job would entail Rice to do two TV commercials, two viral videos, a photo shoot and 30 media interviews. He is also expected to write a weekly column on his analysis about whom he thinks should play in the NFL, He will also be required do field report work where he will interview various NFL players to be featured on the site.
However, Tadros reiterated that the contract will be terminated once he gets involved in another assault case.
"It's been one year since Mr. Rice physically assaulted his wife and we are very confident that he will not do it again. But in the event that he does while being employed by Pro Draft League, his contract will be immediately terminated and the entire $500k must be returned PLUS an additional $500k in damages that our brand will incur for being associated with Mr. Rice," he added, as quoted by TMZ.
Rice got involved in the controversy after a video was leaked online showing him punching his wife Janay while inside a casino elevator. It angered the public as Janay was seen lying unconscious in the elevator after getting hit then Rice dragged her outside of it. He was suspended by the NFL but was reinstated in November when a judge ruled in his favor.
A recent Washington Post report said that Rice recently released a statement saying sorry for what he has done and expressing his plan to leave Maryland and move back to New York.
In his statement, Rice expressed that his seven-year stay in Baltimore was "by far been the best of our lives."
"From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for the love and support you've shown my family and I throughout my football career," he was quoted by Washington Post as saying.
He extended his apologies to the young individuals who look up to him saying he is "truly sorry" for letting them down.
"There is no excuse for domestic violence, and I apologize for the horrible mistake I made. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me, and I hope to make a positive difference in people's lives by raising awareness of this issue," he added.
Rice then thanked the Ravens for helping him and his family. As for the next chapter in the NFL player's life, the public will wait if he will accept the website's offer or wait for other opportunities out there.
