NBA Trade: Mo Williams, Troy Daniels to Hornets
Veteran guards Troy Daniels and Mo Williams are now officially off the Minnesota Timberwolves and in the Charlotte Hornets lineup.
"We are excited to be adding two quality players to our organization ... Mo Williams is a proven NBA player who gives us additional versatility and depth in the backcourt, both while Kemba Walker is out and after Kemba returns," said Hornets general manager Rich Cho on Feb. 10, per NBA.com.
Williams was a 4th pick in the 2003 Drafts, making this his 12th year in the league, the report noted. He packs 750 career games for six teams including the Utah Jazz and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and a career average of 13.3 points and 5.0 assists.
The same report revealed that he started in 19 of 41 for the Timberwolves this season, racking up averages of 12.2 points, 6.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds. In 23 of his games, he scored double figures, eight of which at 20 points or over.
On the second player, Cho said: "Troy Daniels is an outstanding shooter who we are already familiar with from having had him in our training camp last season."
NBA.com explained that the sophomore was in the training camp of Charlotte before the 2013-14 NBA season. He now has 41 career games for the Houston Rockets and Minnesota.
The twin transfer was in exchange for guard Gary Neal and a second-round pick in 2019, the report said, also citing cash considerations as a strong factor. Multiple sources confirm the report with a tweet by Yahoo Sports' Andrew Wojnarowski.
The Hornets have also let go of Elliot Williams from his 10-day contract to put the roster count at 15, the NBA.com report noted.
According to Fansided, the multiple moves were, for the Hornets, supposed to lessen the impact of losing Walker to injury, as they stand at 22-29, or seventh in the Eastern Conference.
The big names, such as Rajon Rondo, J.R. Smith and Timofey Mozgov have been traded, Fansided noted, while landing Dion Waiters is out of the picture. They won't choose Lance Stephenson, so Daniels and Williams were sought, the report added.
The report said the moves, especially that of Williams, would most certainly boost the Hornet's confidence in a final hurrah for a playoffs spot.
For the Timberwolves side, the move ends discussions on whether or not they would push through with any movement or just sit them all out. According to CBS Minnesota, they also acquired Atlanta Hawks rookie Adreian Payne.
Canis Hoopus observed that the deal was mostly an exchange of expiring contracts -- with the Hornets' outgoing Neal and ingoing Williams set for free agency in the summer. Daniels' exit from the Timberwolves gives the team a roster spot.
There's no long-term impact in the trade, but Neal might be a back-up guard, the piece added. He is in his fifth season, playing in 43 Hornets games this season, with a 9.6-point average, per NBA.com.
