PS4 News: Some PlayStation Network Passwords Reset Due to 'Irregular Activity'
Sony is trying to reset a small portion of North American PlayStation Network account passwords due to what the company is calling "irregular activity."
Sony made the announcement on an official PlayStation forum post, but did not provide a specific reason for why the company has decided to make this strange move:
"If you are getting an error that your PSN account password is incorrect, you may need to reset it. We routinely monitor for irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected SEN accounts to protect consumers and their account information. Please visit this page for details on how to reset your password: Change and Reset Password. Note that if you have access to the email address and Date of Birth associated with the account, you will be able to reset it yourself. If you are missing one or both of those, then you will need to contact us for further assistance," wrote Sony.
While this is an odd move by Sony, the company has done something similar in the recent past. Earlier in November, Sony did the same thing to PlayStation Network accounts in Europe, and a small number of users had to reset their passwords due to undisclosed problems.
It is unclear how many users can expect to have to reset their passwords. Sony also did not mention if this is a problem that is affecting PlayStation 4 owners or PlayStation 3 owners. If it is the same irregular activity that caused the resets in Europe, then it will most likely be a PlayStation 3 problem; the PlayStation 4 is not yet available in the European market.
The PlayStation 4 has been quite successful after its Nov. 15 launch, and the console has sold more than 1 million consoles since its release despite only being launched in the United States. The Xbox One also reached 1 million consoles sold after launch, but had the added advantage of being launched in 13 different countries rather than just one.
The console has also suffered somewhat due to some hardware issues that have cropped up after launch. Specifically, the so-called Blue Line of Death error that occurs when the console's video output will not function properly, so users cannot use the PlayStation 4 console at all.
