'The SpongeBob Movie' Latest News: Antonio Banderas Says His Pirate Role Was 'Very Traditional' & 'Geared to Children'
Antonio Banderas said that his pirate role in the upcoming animated/live action film "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" should not be compared to the one Johnny Depp portrays in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.
According to the Spanish actor, his movie intends to separate itself from the "hybrid image" in Depp's films, which is "ambiguous, strange, supported by a treacherous Keith Richards" and "closely associated with drugs," Fox News Latino reported.
"I tried to portray a pirate that was very traditional and geared to children, fitting in in terms of my voice and attitude with the parameters of the movie; SpongeBob is defined by its childlike quality and surrealism. Starting with the premise that the protagonist is a sponge, anything is possible," Banderas said, as quoted by Fox News Latino.
"The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," which is based on the hit Nickelodean show, will feature Banderas as the voice behind the pirate Burger-Beard. SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends will travel to the surface from the deep sea of Bikini Bottom in order to stop Burger-Beard from his evil plans, which he will obtain once he lays his hands on the final page of a magical book, the news outlet noted.
The 54-year-old actor also opened up about filming the movie, which he described as "extremely odd because he was completely alone," given that he was the only "flesh and blood" actor to appear in the film, according to Fox News Latino.
"The other characters weren't there. There were sticks with different-colored crosses and they were moving; the red one was SpongeBob, the green one was a friend ... It was extremely tough to work like that," Banderas said, as reported by the news outlet.
He added, "And let me tell you, with the beard and wig I spent the whole day with glue on my skin and it was all irritated by the end of the day."
"The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" will come out in theaters on February 6, 2015, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Aside from Banderas, the film also stars Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Douglas Lawrence, with Paul Tibbitt in the director's chair.
Pharrell Williams, along with Chad Hugo and Shay Haley, contributed to the soundtrack of the movie. The trio recorded the track "Squeeze Me" and other "sweet-sounding" songs for SpongeBob's sidekicks, Patrick Star and Sandy Squirrel. You can listen to the soundtrack's releases here.
