Derrick Rose Injury Update: Right Knee Tear Means Bulls Superstar Could Miss Entire 2013-14 NBA Season
Derrick Rose is facing another long spell on the sidelines as the Chicago Bulls superstar sustained a medial meniscus tear in his right knee late last week.
Rose, who missed the entire 2012-13 NBA season while recovering from an ACL injury in his left knee, hurt his right knee in a non-contact play during their 98-95 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday in Portland.
Bulls head coach Tim Thibodeau confirmed to Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago that the superstar point guard will undergo surgery Monday that will be performed by the famed Dr. Brian Cole, who was the same doctor that repaired Rose's ACL in May last year.
"He's headed back to Chicago today. He'll have surgery Monday. Then we'll have a better idea about what the time table will be," Thibodeau said.
Thibodeau and the team's training staff have yet to give a definite timetable for Rose's return because they still need to know the type of surgery the doctor will perform.
Rose could be back several weeks from now if the doctor decides to remove either a portion of or the entire meniscus, but he could be out for four to six months if the meniscus needs to be re-attached.
The likely scenario is Rose missing the entire season because the doctor might go with the long-term solution of re-attaching the meniscus. The first procedure is said to be a short mterm fix, which will likely put Rose's in jeopardy in the long run.
"The big part is they won't know [which surgery to perform] until they get in," Thibodeau said. "So we're hoping for the best. We of course feel very badly for Derrick. I talked to him at length last night. He's in good spirits."
Despite the latest setback, Thibodeau remains confident that the former Most Valuable Player will manage to bounce back, saying that the mental toughness of Rose is a big key to his recovery.
"I think his mental toughness is going to serve him well," Thibodeau said. "Whenever he's faced any adversity I think his mental toughness has gotten him through. I could tell from [talking to him on Saturday] that there was a resolve of determination. We expect him to make a full recovery. It's another bump in the road and he'll get past it."
Rose has averaged 15.9 points to go along with 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 10 games this season.
