Robin Thicke, Paula Patton Back Together? Estranged Wife to Defend Singer in Court
Paula Patton will be put on the hot seat as it has been reported that she's been called to testify in court over her estranged husband Robin Thicke's ongoing court battle against Marvin Gaye's estate, TMZ reported.
The Gaye family has accused Thicke of copying certain elements from Gaye's 1976 track "After the Dance" for "Love After War", Thicke's song which was released in 2011. To help settle the matter, the court is calling in witnesses, one of which is Patton.
The actress not only appeared in the controversial song's official music video, but it was reported that she also co-wrote it with Thicke.
It is unknown as of yet if Patton will take the oath and defend Thicke, but some might be aware that despite their very public breakup, the two have been trying to patch things up and make amends. Thicke was even invited to a holiday party held at Patton's house. There is a chance that despite their separation, she'll end up supporting him in court, TMZ added.
Thicke has more trouble on his plate than his song with Patton though. He's also being sued over his and Pharrell Williams' 2013 hit song "Blurred Lines", according to Daily Mail.
The Gaye family claimed that the song was similar to and likely stolen from Marvin's track "Got To Give It Up" released in 1977 in his album "Love at the London Palladium."
United States Federal Judge John A. Kronstadt reportedly found merit in the argument.
The case is gaining more ground following the judge's decision last October to deny the motion submitted by Thicke and Williams to reject the claims of copyright infringement. Kronstadt thought there was a good argument about the similarities between "Blurred Lines" and "Got to Give It Up" in the keyboard chords, hooks, bass lines, vocal melodies and signature phrases and decided to push ahead with the trial.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Thicke's trial, and Patton's possible involvement. It's scheduled to begin on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.
Patton broke up with Thicke in February last year after nine years of marriage due to allegations of infidelity. She filed for divorce from the singer in October, but the two continue to co-parent their son Julian, who is four years old, according to Mirror.
On the other hand. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Sony/ATV has recently settled with Gaye's family over claims that the publishing company allegedly protected "Blurred Lines" and breached "its obligations to protect the Gaye catalog".
"The agreement means that Sony/ATV won't have to defend its impartiality in administering copyrights to both Thicke's work and Gaye's. It will also release the company from having to address what was said to have been a conflict inherent in owning 30 percent of the music publishing market," THR explained.
