'Star Trek 3' 2016 Movie Cast, Plot Rumors & News: Simon Pegg to Co-Write Script With Doug Jung
Fans will no doubt be happy to know that Paramount Pictures is pushing through with its science fiction action film "Star Trek 3" by bringing in new staff to help write the film, one of which is Montgomery "Scotty" Scott himself, Simon Pegg, IGN reported.
The "Star Trek" film franchise originally began in 1979 and since then it spawned six Original Series films, four Next Generation films and the current Rebooted series of films that began with 2009's "Star Trek" and was followed by 2013's "Star Trek: Into Darkness." The franchise is now getting ready for its thirteenth film, the still untitled "Star Trek 3," and while it suffered a few delays, Paramount brought in new people to help bring the show to life.
Deadline broke the news that Pegg has been invited to co-write the script with Doug Jung. Both of them will be replacing previous writer Robert Orci, who dropped out of the project.
Known in the franchise for playing Scotty the chief engineer of the USS Enterprise, Pegg already has a few writing credentials under his belt. He wrote "Run Fatboy Run" and starred in and co-wrote the "Cornetto Trilogy" with director Edgar Wright, which consisted of films "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" and "World's End," Deadline added.
Meanwhile, Jung is known for his work on TNT's cop drama "Dark Blue," "Big Love," "Banshee" and Paramount and Bad Robot film "Diamond."
The two of them will be joining new director Justin Lin from "Fast & Furious," who also took over from Orci. The latter reportedly stepped down from the project due to the studio's concerns over the script, though he's still onboard as producer, according to The Guardian.
Given the recent change in crew, it is unknown as of yet what story or direction they'll be coming up with for the third film. With Lin helming and given Pegg and Jung's previous works, they will all hopefully provide a fresh take and new ideas into the third film.
While Pegg is all set to return to the franchise as a writer and also as Scotty, others from the main cast are also going to take part in "Star Trek 3." Returning to the franchise are Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Checkov and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, according to Empire.
"Star Trek 3" is slated to be released on July 8, 2016.
