Barack Obama Says San Antonio Spurs Are 'Old' & 'Boring' [Watch Video Here]
U.S. President Barack Obama's welcome speech at the White House during the celebratory gathering for the 2014 NBA Finals winner San Antonio Spurs elicited a few laughs from guests who attended the event.
ESPN reported that while Obama praised the Spurs for their sportsmanship which he said is "a great metaphor for what America should be all about," he also joked about some of the players' age.
"Let's face it, just a little while back, people were saying that the Spurs were past their prime, not just old but kind of boring. Now they're fresh and exciting, which is basically the exact opposite of what happens to presidents," he was quoted by ESPN as saying.
"For an old guy, it makes me feel good to see, you know, where's Tim?" Obama said, pointing at 38-year-old Tim Duncan. "It makes me feel good to see that folks in advancing years can succeed in a young man's sport."
According to TMZ, Obama also took a few shots at Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and touched on the food blogging career of Matt Broner who calls himself as "The Red Mamba."
But the U.S. President became a little more serious when he said that the team has become a United Nations of basketball because of diverse players.
"It shows the way that this wonderful sport has become an international sport," he added.
He also discussed that the team's hiring of WNBA star Becky Hammon to be part of their coaching staff was something worth mentioning.
"As somebody who's got two daughters, one of who is a baller, it makes me feel good when excellence is recognized regardless of gender," the President noted then praised the Spurs for their public service efforts on literacy and community development in their hometown.
The President, according to TMZ, also continued his comedy tour with the Spurs who were roasted to their faces during their visit to the White House.
It was a really memorable moment for the sport and Tiago Splitter was quick to say his thanks to Obama on his Twitter account.
"thanks @BarackObama to have us!! it was an honor!" Splitter posted.
It can be remembered that last year, the U.S. President also did the same comedy stunt on the Seattle Seahawks who also visited the White House.
According to an earlier ESPN report, Obama praised the Seahawks in a funny way saying: "Of course, I don't need to tell you how outstanding the Seahawks are because they did a pretty good job of describing themselves. You may have heard of the Legion of Boom."
