'Glee' Season 6 Spoilers, Replay & Recap: Episode 1 of Finale Series - What You Need to Know
The premiere episode of the sixth season of "Glee" picked up several months after Season 5's final moments. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) is once again under the spotlight, but this time she returned to Lima together with the original New Direction members, who all found time to ditch whatever's going on in their separate lives to return to the choir room where Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) first mentored them -- misfits, jocks, and popular cheerleaders alike.
The first episode also revealed that Rachel's sitcom, titled "That's So Rachel," was a major flop; it was cancelled after only one episode. She also found out that her parents are divorcing and that their house is up for selling, according to Entertainment Weekly.
To get away from the discord surrounding her family, Rachel meets Blaine (Darren Criss), who is now coaching the all-male group Dalton Academy Warblers, at the local coffee shop. She finds out that he and Kurt (Chris Colfer) are no longer together and that they called their wedding off. To top it all off, Blaine is now dating David Karofsky (Max Adler), who used to bully both him and Kurt. As what TV Line pointed out, this plot is somewhat an insult to the fans of Klaine "who have endured their relationship's many ups and downs over the years."
As for the rest of the gang, Sam (Chord Overstreet) attempted to get back with Mercedes (Amber Riley). The Unholy Trinity -- Quinn (Dianna Agron), Santana (Naya Rivera), and Brittany (Heather Morris) -- also graced the episode with two performances. Rachel, in addition, recruited the entire original New Direction squad to convince McKinley High students to join the Glee Club. According to Entertainment Weekly, everyone heads to the cafeteria dressed in neon clothing, breaking out an impromptu song and dance number to the tune of "Take On Me."
Will Schuester, on the other hand, is now coaching Vocal Adrenaline. The one major setback of this? This group was not as enthusiastic as the New Direction members, and, according to Entertainment Weekly, "they wouldn't touch anything from the Journey songbook with a 10-foot pole."
Meanwhile, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is now flourishing as McKinley High's new principal.
The premiere also featured the new faces being recruited to New Direction, and fans of the show should expect these newbies to grace "Glee" until its series finale. The new cast members include Spencer (Marshall Williams), a "post-modern gay," according to TV Line, Chicago transfer student and bullied Roderick (Noah Guthrie), and Cheerios members Madison (Laura Drefuss) and Mason (Billy Lewis, Jr.), who are also dubbed as "incest twins."
Jane (Samantha Ware), Dalton Academy's first female student, also joins Rachel's Glee Club after Blaine's all-male Warblers rejected her, Entertainment Weekly noted. Blaine then angrily confronts Kurt and Rachel in the auditorium for stealing Jane away. However, the latter retaliates by telling Blaine that she doesn't want to share her talents with a group who doesn't want her.
"Glee" airs on FOX at 8 PM ET.
