Kanye West Fans Spark Controversy on Twitter: 'Who is Paul McCartney?'

By Maria Myka| Jan 06, 2015

The downside of reading tweets instead of saying words aloud is the fact that sometimes, people can't read sarcasm, nor take a joke.

For instance, when Kanye West's fans asked who Paul McCartney is, "self-proclaimed music history professors" as dubbed by Billboard, exploded on the micro-blogging site, outraged about "kids these days" who don't know any better.

The controversy started when Kanye's collaboration with the living legend dropped on New Year's Eve, and Twitter lighted up with tweets mistaking him for an "unknown artist."

Among the tweets that irked Beatles fans included the following:

From @DuesNice: "Kanye has a great ear for talent. This Paul McCartney guy gonna be huge."

@Morello_Justin tweeted, "Kanye West really knows how to expose great new talent. Bet this Paul McCartney guy is gonna be HUGE after this song."

@CurveDaily also asked, "who tf is paul mccartney???!??! this is why i love kanye for shining light on unknown artists"

Billboard then made it clear that the people who did wonder who the Macca is, were really just playing an online joke, and sarcasm was intended.

Although plenty of people laughed it off, others were angry.

@Sky_Razzball ranted, "Only thing makes me mad about the stupid McCartney/Kanye tweets is these damn kids have google. Ain't no reason for your stupidity today."

@AliMaadelat lost his faith in humanity, noting, "Losing hope in humanity by the minute. RT if you know who Paul McCartney is #TheBeatles"

@dukeofhoops even deemed for it to be a downfall for youth, saying, "The downfall of America's youth has officially concluded with people not knowing who Paul McCartney is."

As it turned out, the kids weren't the ones who needed saving from their tastes in music, but rather, the Twitter users who can't figure out jokes and online trolls, which really does come in droves online.

The song, "Only One" is, as noted by Entertainment Tonight, is a sweet ballad that Kanye sung to his daughter, North, told from the perspective of his late mother. The Daily Mail also reported that Kanye and Paul got together in early 2014 to put the song together, and it is only just the start of a larger project between the two famous figures.

There has been no response concerning the controversy from Kanye's camp, however, Macca took to Twitter his collaboration with Yeezus, saying, "For any of you guys who were wondering what I was doing with @kanyewest ... Here it is: https://www.kanyewest.com Happy rocking new year!"
