‘The Hunger Games’ Fan Fiction Films: 5 Great Productions You’ll Love to See

By Staff| Dec 30, 2014

Our generation's post-apocalyptic, dystopian franchise is undeniably a big hit. It's third movie installment, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1," graced November 2014 as another record-breaker. Variety reported that the film was able to secure this year's biggest domestic weekend, earning $123 million across 4,151 locations.

Lionsgate's executive vice president for distribution David Spitz commented, "It was a tremendous weekend. The fifteenth largest in history. It shows the strength of this franchise."

Sure enough, the Girl on Fire was able to captivate her cult-like following once again. But "Mockingjay Part 2" doesn't hit the theaters until November next year, and fans could now be rereading the novels or replaying the films at home. Another year of wait could be agonizing indeed, so we thought of bringing you the greatest fan-made flicks so far -- and die-hard citizens of Panem can't ignore these. President Snow would tell you: "It's mandatory."

Without further ado, check out our top picks below, with a little description for those new to the story. Note that these videos have all been uploaded to YouTube, so make sure to check the makers' channels for more. Remember: At the time of this writing, we've got about 11 long months to juice patience.

Top 5

"Hunger Games - Weeping Willow"

Created by Rogue Zohu Productions, the short film chronicles the story of Willow, a young girl reaped for the 52nd Hunger Games. Looking at the official timeline, this happened two years after the Second Quarter Quell, where District 12's Haymitch Abernathy was crowned Victor among 48 tributes.

Willow is joined by her brother Tristan, so that she does not have to face the Games alone. Tristan cannot volunteer for Willow, just like what Katniss did for Prim, as they're of opposite sexes.

The flick made use of realistic-looking pedestals for the Cornucopia, including a countdown hologram.

"Cirrus Quell - A Hunger Games Story"

This fan film consists of six parts. The first begins with Cirrus' narration, and the surprise comes right after! You might be reminded of Clove's knife-throwing scenes in the training center.

Seventeen-year-old Cirrus also comes from District 7, and as you may have noticed, he's said to be the origin of the Quarter Quell. His story was set 51 years prior to Katniss' time, participating in the 23rd Annual Hunger Games.

The flick was created by Joshua Chislett / Creativision Studios.

Top 3

"The Hunger Games - Johanna Mason"

Now the character featured in this flick is definitely familiar, although she hasn't made much appearance in the recent film. It's Johanna Mason of District 7, a vicious killer who pretended to be a weakling, striking when only few other tributes were left. That's how she survived.

As described in the books, Johanna is skilled with axes, since District 7's main industry is lumber.

The fan film was created by WellwoodProductions. Spoiler: You'll love how she slayed three guys here.

Top 2

"Finnick Odair - A Hunger Games Story"

This is the most recent of our curated fan films, and it featured none other than the charismatic, Finnick Odair of District 4. Finnick was a tribute from the 65th Hunger Games, and is described to very skilled in the use of trident.

Joshua Chislett's work flashed holographic, "Fallen Tributes" announcements in the arena sky, among other visually-appealing stunts and graphics. For all Finnick fans out there, you most certainly don't want to miss this.

And it goes with another spoiler: Comment below how you felt about the final scene.

Top 1

"Hunger Games: The Second Quarter Quell"

Created by Mainstay Productions, our top fan film chronicles the story of Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss Everdeen's mentor who won the 50th Hunger Games. As we've said above, it's the Second Quarter Quell, which doubled the number of participating tributes.

As implied in the book, the arena of this Quell was much like of a poison paradise. While everything seemed to be as inviting, the risk they carry might just be worth your life.

Haymitch fought in the end against the Career female tribute of District 1. As you may have known, the force field became his friend towards victory.
