'Inherent Vice' Actress Katherine Waterston Joins Steve Jobs Biopic; Michael Fassbender Still In Negotiation
Katherine Waterston has bagged the female lead role in Universal's Steve Jobs biopic, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
The "Inherent Vice" actress will play the role of Chrisann Brennan. Brennan was Jobs' "high school girlfriend, longtime partner and the mother of his first child," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Waterston previously appeared in films such as "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her," "Night Moves" opposite Jesse Eisenberg, and in indie movies including "Queen of Earth" and "Manhattan Romance," THR added.
Seth Rogen, on the other hand, is still in line to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Michael Stuhlbarg will portray Andy Hertzfeld, "the computer scientist and inventor who was part of the original Apple development team that came up with Macintosh Operating System," Deadline reported. Hertzfeld reportedly worked closely with Jobs but he eventually left for Google in 2005.
There is no official confirmation yet about who will play Jobs, but The Verge reported that Michael Fassbender is a strong contender for the role. Other actors have also been reported to portray Jobs, including Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio, but they all have dropped out.
The news outlet also added that Brennan and Jobs' daughter, Lisa, will have a major presence in the film. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the movie's screenplay, said that "Lisa would be the heroine of the movie."
"She didn't participate in Walter Isaacson's book, because her father was alive at the time, and she didn't want to alienate either of her parents, so I was very grateful that she was willing to spend time with me," Sorkin said, referring to Lisa. "She is the heroine of the movie," he added, as quoted by The Verge.
According to the news outlet, "Jobs initially denied paternity of his daughter, now 36, though they later reconnected and she lived with him in her teens."
The 181-page script written by Sorkin is reportedly a three-act story "set backstage before three of Jobs' major product launches spanning 16 years," The Verge noted. It will mostly likely involve 1983's Macintosh debut, 1988's NeXT Introduction, and 2001's iPod reveal, the outlet predicted.
The film will be produced by Scott Rudin, Mark Gordon, Guymon Casady, and Christian Colson. Danny Boyle, of "Slumdog Millionaire" and "28 Days Later," will direct, The Verge noted. The movie was originally set up to be distributed by Sony, but Universal took over. It will be based on Jobs' biography written by Walter Isaacson, Entertainment Weekly reported.
The still untitled Steve Jobs movie will start shooting in 2015, according to Deadline.
