Outkast Reunion is Now a Real Possibility
The legendary rap duo Outkast could be getting back together. For real this time.
Andre 3000 and Big Boi have been drifting apart for over a decade. Their last major album release came in 2006, but was far from a studio album of their own, functioning rather as a soundtrack for the movie “Idlewild.” Even their previous album release, 2003’s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”, was technically two separate albums, one a demonstration of Andre’s talents, the other showcasing Big Boi. After "Idlewild" they split ways an pursued their own paths. Rumors of a growing rift between the two rappers ran rampant, stripping away any hopes of a reunion, until now.
“Multiple Sources” tell Billboard that Outkast will reunite for Coachella in April. One unnamed source goes as far to say that there have been “some conversations,” while another says it’s “all systems go.” Neither Andre nor Big Boi have released any official statements, but it’s hard not to get our hopes up at this point.
The first weekend of Coachella begins on April 11 in Indio, California. The festival is notorious for attracting false rumors -- last year Daft Punk was expected to make a surprise appearance. They did not -- but there’s no harm in speculation.
An Outkast reunion would capture the essence of early 90s hip-hop. The immense nostalgia would bring back memories of the late rappers from the genre’s greatest era. But more than anything, it would bring two of the industry’s greatest rappers back together. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope the rumors ring true. For real this time.
