Amy Adams and One Direction on 'Saturday Night Live': Top 4 Best Sketches You Need to See
The Christmas episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams with musical guest One Direction, was a particularly festive one. Accompanied by former "SNL" stars Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen, and Mike Myers, the episode focused on uncomfortable current events, which, as Rolling Stone puts it, is the show's "sweet spot."
Some sketches managed to stand out and exhibit holiday cheer for everyone. Here are four sketches from the latest episode which were absolute favorites.
'Christmas Serial'
Cecily Strong's impersonation of Sarah Koenig, host of the popular podcast "Serial," was impressive and spot-on. The holiday-specific plotline of the sketch focused on "the creepy tale of Kris Kringle and the lingering question as to his ability to deliver presents near and far in just one night," according to Rolling Stone.
The "Serial" parody also featured "grainy, archival footage, brilliantly odd courtroom sketches, and assorted delightful sound-bites," TV Line reports.
'Cold Open Featuring Dr. Evil'
The Christmas episode of "SNL" also addressed the Sony hack. Taran Killam, who impersonated singer Sam Smith, launched the "Cold Open" sketch, but was bombarded by "SNL" alum Myers to resurrect his Dr. Evil character. Dr. Evil was much-loved during his appearances in the past seasons of the show, and he proved his magic once again when he poked fun of the Sony-North Korea controversy.
Dr. Evil's line pertaining to North Korea: "You're one of the most evil countries in the world, and your act of war is to kill a movie?" and "They haven't had a hit since The Walkman" addressed to Sony Pictures garnered huge laughs from the audience, according to TV Line.
'Weekend Update: Garth and Kat'
Armisen and Wiig made a surprise appearance on "Weekend Update" by playing the disastrous musical duo Garth and Kat. The two wore their signature holiday vests and performed songs from their Hanukkah album, which, for longtime "SNL" fans, are expectedly terrible and improvised.
According to Bustle, Garth and Kat included a lot of snaps in their impromptu performance, but was inevitably cut off by "Weekend Update" host Michael Che, asking the duo if they actually wrote their songs or just improvised them. This was always the scenario during Seth Meyers' time in the "Update" desk, and seeing it play out once again on the "SNL" screen proved to be nostalgic and delightful for viewers.
'Girlfriends Talk Show With Amy Adams and One Direction'
Strong and Aidy Bryant's "Girlfriends Talk Show" sketch was graced by Adams and the five heartthrobs of the British group One Direction, namely: Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.
Rolling Stone describes the sketch as a "natural fit;" Strong, Bryant, and Adams played as sassy teens while the boys of 1D served as male high school dancers. The appearance of One Direction garnered loud screams from their fans in the studio, especially when the boys did some wacky dancing in the end.
