Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fight: Top 5 Reasons Why Megafight Won't Happen
When Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that the fight with Manny Pacquiao will happen in May next year, a lot of boxing analysts found it hard to believe him. Was the announcement just a mere publicity stunt?
Sports World News, in a report, said that this latest development should not raise the hopes of the fans of these two fighters and the entire boxing industry as there are a handful of reasons why the matchup will not materialize.
Here are the five reasons why the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout is still far from happening:
1. Monetary concerns
It has been a known fact that Mayweather is greatly concerned with the money that he will make from the fight and is expecting that he will pocket more than his opponent. A BoxingNews24 said that Mayweather wants to have a 70/30 split on the earnings of the fight including PPV numbers as he is known to be one of the richest athelets today. For Pacquiao's part, he has already expressed that he's more concerned about leaving a legacy to the boxing industry. If the two camps will not agree on a certain number or division, the fight will never materialize.
2. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum
Sports World News explained that Mayweather is not really in good terms with Arum and that he has repeatedly expressed that he would not want to work with him again. When he announced that he wanted to fight Pacquiao, Mayweather said that Arum blocked the fight he previously offered Pacquiao.
"Manny Pacquiao, Bob Arum, you guys have been ducking us for years. Before, we tried to make the fight happen, and you guys didn't want to take random blood and urine testing. So that's why the fight didn't happen. Then I offered you $40 million, and you didn't want to make the fight happen. Then you lost twice, and now you're coming back begging for the same money. That's not going to happen. He's not at my level," Mayweather was quoted by Review Journal as saying.
But in an interview with Philippine local TV network, ABS-CBN, Arum said that it is the other way around. "You have to judge that for yourself. It's certainly not Top Rank, it's certainly not Manny Pacquiao," Arum stressed. "We've done everything to come to the table and work out a deal," he explained.
3. Social media tirades from both fighters
The two boxers have been taunting each other on social media. Recently, Pacquiao posted on his Twitter page, a direct challenge to Mayweather.
"@FloydMayweather, don't be a boxing humbug. Let's give the fans the fight they want. They have waited long enough," the Filipino boxer tweeted.
Prior to this, Mayweather has also made Pacquiao the laugh of the entire world as he reposted the video of the Filipino champ getting knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez.
4. Canelo Alvarez
According to Sports World News, Canelo Alvarez is scheduled to fight Miguel Cotto on May 2 and that he has no plans of changing the date of the fight just to make the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happen.
5. Amir Khan
The fighter has long expressed his intention to fight Mayweather and his record and fast way to the top could lure the undefeated American fighter to just fight him over Pacquiao.
